Attacking Through the Middle in Soccer

Attacking through the middle in soccer requires art, creativity, and precision.
Unfortunately, many current soccer methodologies are restricting a player’s capacity to develop these qualities.

For example, many say, “When back to goal, pass back with one touch.”
While this can be a good solution in many cases, this restricts what players develop.

Our method, “borrowed” from high-level futsal, provides a great variety of options (to find the target, target movement, turns, and combining with the target). As a consequence, players work on different movements, runs, and combinations.

We believe that during developmental years players should be exposed to a great variety of possibilities, developing physically, technically, tactically, and cognitively. As they grow, they will mature their decision-making and increase effectiveness.

Players will be challenged to learn, think, debate and, at times, even present.

Yes, we will have a lot of fun and play time, but also a lot of content to master.

Following through with our last post, which was a share from the women’s world cup, showing a player using a “flick” (scoop, lift) to beat an opponent, it reminded us to share a few of the slides from our presentation at the 2024 United Soccer Coaches convention.

A few take aways from the slides:

1- Futsal is great to work on a great variety of different techniques,
2- Any technique “from futsal” can be used in soccer,
3- The frequence that a technique will be used, can differ in soccer and futsal,
4- This frequence can change. For example, goalkeeper techniques normally used only in futsal (or some in handball) are now commonly used in soccer.
5- We can’t really say a technique is a futsal or soccer technique. We can say that is known from its use in one sport or another, or that it may have started in one sport or another, but techniques don’t really belong to one sport or another. However, certain environments may facilitate a technique to be mastered.

06/21/2024

In over 20 years coaching, in different countries, states, colleges, clubs, I have not met a youth soccer coach who would properly teach and practices flicks (scoops, lifts, or whatever you call it), practicing with both feet, inside foot flick, outside foot flick, toes.

It is outstanding the number of things that are typically worked on futsal, but are not part of soccer methodologies.

And even more incredible, the resistance that most (the great majority of) soccer coaches will have to try to open their minds to it.

Meanwhile, we keep sharing some tips here and there about the possibilities :)

Thiago Motta is Juventus' new coach.
The article below does a great job talking about his strategies and style.
What it does not do, as well as all other press releases, is to tie how his past as a great futsal player influences his styles.

Thiago Motta played futsal for years, at top Brazilian futsal academies, before completely migrating to the soccer fields.

The article bellow talks about:
-using the goalkeeper in possession,
-allowing players to rotate to unbalance the opposition,
-playing with 1 or 2 "pivots",
-playing possession but also looking to pe*****te,
-defensive intensity.

Futsal is not only a way to develop players, but also coaches.
It allows the coach the see the game in much more detail, not only thinking "formations" and specific positions,
but also how players interact with each other, creating effective dynamics.

UEFA-licensed coaches from The Coaches' Voice take a deep dive into the tactics and principles employed by Bologna manager Thiago Motta
