Wilkinsburg Youth Project is a work readiness program that hires local teenage youth and trains them to succeed in a professional environment. In years past, WYP has had a media team, two mentoring teams and a gardening team.

Currently, Wilkinsburg Youth Project’s school year program will begin fully remote, though we anticipate a gradual transition back to in-person work once it is safe to do so. Until that time, the youth in our program are only able to work on our media team.

The Wilkinsburg Youth Project Media Team Leader is responsible for facilitating the remote programming designed and conducted by a Wilkinsburg artist and business owner. This programming is based in the arts, with a focus on community improvement through a variety of different mediums.

The Team Leader’s role will be expected to encourage youth to participate, assist with any problems they might encounter, and ensure that the team’s youth are following the WYP Standards, a list of conduct expectations that everyone involved with WYP must follow. The team leader will be expected to write and deliver a one-page progress report for each youth on their team every two weeks, and run group discussions on a once-weekly basis.

This is a very unique, strange and frequently-difficult time for all of us in a variety of different ways. We are trying to keep our program active and fulfilling its mission to the best of our ability, but this is new ground for us and there is still a lot we just don't know. It is imperative that any job applicant be flexible, understanding, and committed to our shared goal of providing enriching, community-based programming for our youth.

This is a KEYS Americorps position

Presenting the BYP/WYP Media Team Zine, in partnership with Meshwork Press!

Creative Minds is a youth-led art publication that amplifies the voices of the Braddock Youth Project (BYP) and the Wilkinsburg Youth Project (WYP). The theme of this first issue, The Bigger Picture, offers reflections on the many challenges of the moment including the COVID-19 crisis, the recent uprisings in response to systematic racism and police brutality against people of color, and the hardships facing our healthcare and education systems. This issue also proclaims solidarity in the fight for black lives and illustrates personal narratives and histories. It celebrates and honors the abundance of joy and love found in our friendships and family bonds. But above all, it is an example of the powerful voices of young people working together to speak their truths and reimagine the world around them.

Sierra shared with us a photo that inspires her. Here are her thoughts on that. “I thought about making art with my finger, using the tools in my notes. I wanted to share my thoughts on how I felt about what’s going on in the world, and what better way to spread love. I usually express myself drawling, writing, or doing something with art. I think it is very necessary to find ways to keep your mind stimulated or find a hobby that you enjoy. It’s very easy to get distracted and some of us have a hard time staying focus. Sometimes we need someone or something to encourage us. This is a note to myself how love wins, no matter what hard times I’m going through that if i remain positive I’ll be happy. What are the things that encourages you to keep going?”

Alisa went to visit family this past week and they took Luna (her puppy) swimming for the first time. As you can see, Luna loved it.
