A nasty cold prevented me from teaching my Warm Yin class at Yoga Garden PBO last night 😭🤧 So instead, I stayed in bed and wrote down all the thoughts I would’ve shared in class.
🔥 My Hot Take on Yin Yoga: I don’t recommend it for beginners. 🔥
Fun fact: When I first started practicing yoga, I hated Yin. Loathed it. Despised it. Avoided it at all costs.
It felt boring, pointless, and impossibly still. (This was long before my ADHD diagnosis 🙃).
Back then, I was all-flow-all-day-every-day — anything to get out of my head and move. Movement was my distraction.
But as my practice evolved, I started to understand what Yin really is… and why I resisted it so hard in the first place.
When you’re still learning to read your body’s signals or trust your breath, Yin can feel super uncomfortable, even discouraging.
But once you develop that self-awareness and learn to stay curious instead of reactive, Yin becomes a whole different experience.
It’s not just about stretching your body.
It’s about transforming your relationship with yourself.
That’s why I don’t typically recommend Yin for first-time-yogis. It takes TIME to build that self-awareness and mental stamina to really reap the benefits of Yin.
That’s not to say beginners aren’t welcome in my Warm Yin classes (ALL are welcome!), but coming in with an open mind and realistic expectations for what Yin is will make all the difference in how you experience it.
More thoughts here:
Yin Yoga demands stillness, patience, and the courage to sit with discomfort, physically and mentally. It's a slow burn. And that's exactly why it's so powerful.
