HNL Campaign for College: A Mission for Admission

Many times, in life things don’t always go according to plan. Life gives us these ebbs and flows of fortune and tragedy, and while most days don’t have such highs and lows, every once in a while, there’s a moment that stops you in your tracks.

I had a moment like that the other day.

A young woman who worked hard, got into college, and was preparing to start the next chapter of her life unexpectedly lost a significant piece of the funding that was supposed to help get her there. The who and will remain private out of respect for the family, but the larger issue remains: how do we get this kid, who’s done everything right, to academia? I lost sleep over it.

I’m not a rich man, I can’t fix the cost of college. I can’t replace every scholarship dollar that disappears.

I am stubborn and tenacious, though. Problems are only situations that don’t yet have a solution. So, I’d find one.

But we can wash some houses.

This year, Hook N Ladder Power Washing Co. is launching its first ever scholastic fundraising effort:
HNL Campaign for College: A Mission for Admission.

The idea is simple: from August 3 through Labor Day, when you book qualifying exterior-cleaning work with Hook N Ladder, we’ll contribute part of what HNL earns from that job toward helping a student pay for college.

HNL contributes 10% of every qualifying Campaign for College job.
Our goal for the inaugural campaign is $5,000.

And while this year's campaign started because of one young woman's situation, I don't want it to end there.

The Campaign for College will become an annual HNL tradition; with a new student selected each year from a first responder, military, or veteran family, including families who have lost someone in the line of duty or in service to our country.

The mission is straightforward:
You give us work.
We go to work.
Together, we help put a kid through school.

Book by Labor Day and help us make this extraordinary young woman’s dreams come true.

Why we do what we do.

Gotten quite a few questions about our decision to not charge for kids 15 and under to hunt. Understandably a lot of people are pretty surprised at that decision.

Growing up my dad like many other parents took me hunting all the time. From the time I was able to hold a gun, I went. He instilled in me a love and a respect for the outdoors that went beyond the waterfowl world. Unfortunately though, any hunting, especially waterfowl hunting, is expensive. Growing up he never really got the chance to take me on many guided trips. Often times he would sacrifice himself going on one because he knew I would be upset that I couldn’t go.

Now that I have grown up, I understand why. Having 4 kids myself, It’s expensive to outfit kids to hunt. Our goal is to allow parents to be able to afford to take their kids on hunts without having to sacrifice too much to get there. All while being able to make memories that I hope will last them both a lifetime.

Long story short, we understand it’s expensive and we understand we may loose some money. But in today’s world some things are worth more than cash.

❗️❗️❗️26/27 Waterfowl Season ❗️❗️❗️

With the season right around the corner, I wanted to take a moment and introduce myself and Dusty Peaden and explain who we are and what we are about.

My name is Darren Harris and I started Firehouse Outfitters in 2017 with the goal of providing first responders and service members an affordable option to go layout hunting. Our passion for both waterfowl hunting and the fire service allowed us to create a unique environment centered around bringing the brotherhood and camaraderie of the firehouse, to the waterfowl world.

Both Dusty and myself work for Morehead City Fire Department and have been in the fire service collectively more than 35 years. We are both licensed USCG Captains and have been running the waters of the Pamlico since we were able to drive a boat. We strive to ensure everyone has a safe and productive hunt all while getting to enjoy the waterfowl hunting the Pamlico has to offer.

That being said, our books are open!

Days are first come first serve and will not be held without deposit. Deposit is half the total and is due upfront. Deposits are typically non-refundable however we understand life happens and we are willing to work with you.

We hunt a 2 man UFO layout boat and run a 22ft Sea Hunt center console as our tender.

Hunts are primarily conducted between Bath and Swan Quarter on the Pamlico River and Sound.

Cost is $250 per person per day. With a 2 person or $500 minimum. Active duty and retired military, firefighters, law enforcement, and EMS get a $50 per person per day discount. Kids 15 and under hunt free with paying adult.

As always please contact us with any questions and we look forward to having you this year.

We have had several inquiries about availability during the month of November and how our season is going. In short we haven’t hunted at all.

In addition to working full time at the fire department and guiding hunts. We are also instructors at Beaufort County Community College. Since January we are been leading a nighttime fire academy and the month of November has been filled with running burn evolutions.

Don’t worry we finish teaching December 13th and we will be back hunting the start of the second season. See you soon!

We only have a couple dates left for the upcoming season. Get them while you can!
