FOR THE ATHLETE…
TEAM DRAMA
Being part of a team can be one of the best parts of sports.
But sometimes it can also be one of the hardest.
Different personalities.
Different friendships.
Different emotions.
Gossip, misunderstandings, and conflict can happen on any team.
When it does, it can feel uncomfortable, it can hurt and can be distracting. It may even make you question your place or wonder what others are saying about you.
In those moments, remember something important:
• You can’t control every situation around you.
• And most of the time, whatever people are talking about will fade quicker than it feels in the moment.
• Sometimes athletes project their own struggles, frustrations, or insecurities onto others. What they’re dealing with may have very little to do with you.
• If jealousy shows up, don’t dim your shine. Continue working hard, supporting your teammates, and focusing on your growth.
• And if there is something you truly need to apologize for, own it. Taking responsibility shows maturity and earns respect.
At the end of the day, strong teams aren’t the ones without challenges.
They’re the ones who learn how to move through them together.
For coaches, it’s important to recognize when these dynamics may be happening within a team. Checking in with players, opening conversations, and intentionally working to build trust and unity can make a powerful difference in the team environment and team’s success overall.
