I’m not sure what bias tends to creep into the minds of us modern humans where we tend to make everything bigger than it needs to be. Perhaps our easy access to materials and power tools changed us.

When you handle an artifact it usually conveys some element of delicacy. Ten January Cave Atlatl is a good example. Most modern atlatl darts are too big for it. It throws well from smaller lightweight darts like reed or willow.

About the actual Novátla and what sets it apart from a more traditional atlatl.

For starters it’s made by robots. Secondly, it has a magnetic spur to lock onto the rear of a dart for easier use (patent pending). The leather loops are size adjustable and very comfy. The Atlatl weights are cut and polished river rock. Finally, the darts are collapsible two piece shafts that taper in length to simulate a natural willow shoot for optimum flight.

Check out more about how it works here:

A new atlatl, inspired by the past. The atlatl [AT-latl] is a device used to throw a light flexible spear (called a dart) with more leverage and accuracy than a spear thrown by hand. Atlatls have been around since at least the last Ice Age and were used to hunt everything from wooly mammoths to
