I coach executive function for a living. This weekend, at parents weekend, I got to just be a mum. 💛

And here’s what I notice: with my own child, I don’t want to be the coach. I want to be the one who listens, celebrates, and asks “what do you need from me?”

That’s exactly why I believe in having someone else in your child’s corner. When a coach holds the structure, the systems, and the accountability, parents get to step out of the reminder role and back into the relationship.

Because the thing our young adults children need most from us isn’t another checklist. It’s us. 🤍

If your family is stuck in the nag-and-resist loop, you’re not failing. You’re just wearing too many hats.

Before OPPTEmizer, I spent years as a classroom teacher, then in administration. I watched hundreds of capable kids get labeled “disorganized” or “unmotivated” when what they actually lacked was a system, not effort.

That’s the seat I coach from. Not just as a parent who’s lived this at home, but as an educator who watched it happen in classrooms for years first.

Both of those things are true at once, and I think that’s rare.

My son traded in his Lego today.

If you know, you know. He’s autistic, and Lego is not just a toy to him. It’s order, it’s sameness, it’s his. Letting any of it go is not a small ask, and there is no version of that trade that isn’t hard.

But he did it. And then he stood at the counter and weighed cash against store credit, asked questions, changed his mind, changed it back, and made the call himself.

That is flexibility. That is decision-making under pressure. That is executive function doing exactly what it’s supposed to do, in a kid who has had to work for every bit of it.

Huge shout out to Bricks & Minifigs Central Phx.

They gave him the time. They answered the questions. They talked to him, not around him, not over him, and not down to him. No rushing, no sighing, no looking at me for the real answer.

That is what an inclusive space actually looks like. Not a sticker on the door. Just people who treat an autistic teen like the person he is and let him do his own negotiating.

Proud of him. Grateful to them.
