"Similarly to mastery motivation in the context of individual learning, autonomous moral motivation is more self-sustaining (Weinstein & Ryan, 2010). It is less easily depleted and less dependent on others’ appraisals of one’s performance. Autonomously motivated individuals are less defensive about their own shortcomings, and thus are better able to learn from past moral mistakes (Krettenauer & Mosleh, 2013; Weinstein et al., 2011). Correspondingly, fostering intrinsic motivation has been identified as an important principle of any effective character education program (Berkowitz et al., 2017)."
