Thank you to Marion Callahan Samkavitz for including me in article on . Marion reached out to me after hearing my KYW Newsradio interview on the topic two weeks ago.
I've been helping many of my clients navigate the uncharted territories that came with . I've been seeing a spike in stress and anxiety related to wearing masks for over 8 hours in the workplace.
If wearing a mask long-term at work is stressing you out, consider this:
- You breathe differently when stressed (shorter, more shallow breaths). You might also breathe differently through a mask (similarly, getting less air to your lungs). To combat this stress cycle, focus on regular, deep, full breaths when wearing your mask.
- A few clients have been experiencing almost panic-like reactions to putting the mask on. I spoke about one client (anonymously and with her permission) in this article. It looked similar to a claustrophobic reaction. Self-talk can make the world of a difference to prevent panic. She found success in mantras such as: "I can breathe. If I need to step out of the office, I can. I am not trapped. I am safe."
- If you have only worn the mask for short shopping trips and now must transition to a full workday, you can 'practice' wearing your mask for longer bouts of time. Even around the house - like breaking in a pair of new shoes. This may help you not only become more used to wearing the mask but also help you find which type of mask you prefer.
- Prepare your day with calming practices, such as meditation or yoga. Going into your day calmer will help you keep stress levels at bay during the workday.

Face masks are likely to become a common part of life, though mandates to wear them have sparked controversy and resistance in some areas.
