Hi friends - I am thinking about all of you who celebrate Christmas or Hanukkah and wishing for you to experience a tiny joy, since the expectation of more while you are grieving can feel totally unrealistic and rage-inducing. My tiny joys included my mom's Christmas cactus blooming today, a gorgeous sunset at a local park, and seeing this great blue heron at that same park. I hope the twinkle of lights or candles, a moment in nature, a delicious cookie or other treat, a memory of your mom, or the excitement of your children can give you that fleeting moment of joy. If it happens, embrace it! If not, it's all okay -- you can't do it wrong. It's perfectly normal and okay to be sad and grumpy (and exhausted!) through the holidays. You're doing a great job (no matter how it feels!!) and I'm rooting for you. Love, Susanna

I have one spot left in the Online Motherless Mothers Support Group.
It's my dream that every motherless mother has someone she can connect with who gets it, a place to slow down enough to feel her grief, and a way to honor her mom.

When you are a mother, and you are navigating how to raise your kids without your own mom...

You are on a unique journey that most of your friends and family may not be able to relate to.

But we can. Randi of Realness Rising and I are both grief coaches, and together: We are opening a group in April for pregnant women & mothers who have lost their own mothers. This group will be held in Philadelphia.

This Mother Loss Support Group will help you:

💜 Navigate the ups and downs of motherhood, without your own mom
💜 Hold you in community with other mothers who get it
💜 Provide support and resources for you, when you are feeling alone

Check out https://www.realnessrising.com/mother-loss for more info about this community.

Wonderful article in my local paper about one daughter's way of remembering her mom at Thanksgiving.

Soon after my mom learned she was dying, she taught me to make a Thanksgiving feast for eight people. I cook the same things every year, as a way to bring her back to life.

I believe there is a connection between our personal grief and our communal grief.
I believe our sorrow can connect us, open us to others' losses, and move us to action.
I believe that when we tend our grief as moms we can better help our kids learn to befriend their big feelings.
I believe that our grief honors our moms and can lead us to new ways to remember them and stay connected to them.
I believe that honoring our moms matters in a world that doesn't support the essential work of mothering.
I believe that by honoring our moms' memories and legacies we can live more fully into the life we have.
I believe grief shared is grief lightened.

This poem has always been a favorite of mine.
I believe that tending to our grief allows us to more fully inhabit our days and opens us. Holding our grief tenderly allows us to let what needs to flow, flow - and creates room for connection and creativity.
Tend your grief in community. My next motherless mothers group starts Nov. 7th. More info and registration here: https://www.susannagilbertson.com/mmgroup

Mothering without your mom is hard.
IMHO, mothering without your mom around the holidays (whichever holidays you celebrate in the fall / winter) is even harder.

Come join us for 6 weeks, online, on Tuesdays from 7-9pm ET starting Nov 7th. We'll make our way through it together.
