I have been using a very unique product for the last month or so. It is the Uncle Norms Minnow Fin that fits on any Minn Kota electric trolling motor. I have it mounted on my Minn Kota Terrova motor on the bow of The Fish Sniffer Rogue Jet 21’ Coastal. Because of the deep vee bow of the Coastal, my Terrova has a 72 inch shaft.
The Minnow Fin is a rudder and stabilizer designed to fit on any Minn Kota electric motor. It is designed to give you up to 10 times the directional control of your trolling motor and boat by having 3 vertical fins that focuses water flow and makes the boat turn much faster than the trolling motor fin alone. These vertical fins ad 77 square inches of rudder area to give you tremendously increased boat control, with much less power consumption. I have used the Minnow Fin at Lakes Shasta, Stampede and Davis with great results. With the increased turning power, you don’t need to run the electric motor nearly as fast as stock, which saves you much needed electricity in your batteries. I have found can have the electric motor turned OFF when there is no wind, and I can still turn quickly and efficiently with just the propulsion of the Evinrude kicker motor. For most trolling situations, now I can have the power on the Minn Kota as little as “1”, when in the past I have constantly had to have the power at “4” or more on the CoPilot controller.
An additional benefit of the Minnow Fin is the design of the horizontal fluke that the vertical fins attach to. This horizonal piece acts like a shock absorber by lessening bow bounce as wind and waves increase. This makes the boat more comfortable and also safer in rough conditions.
The combination of the vertical fins and horizontal fluke also help keep the boat trolling in a straight line, eliminating much of the “wander” of the bow when hit by side winds and waves. This also causes reduced cycling of the Auto Pilot, which also saves battery energy.
The Uncle Norms Minnow Fin is solidly constructed of 1/8 inch welded aluminum, and it doesn’t protrude out as far from the motor as some other design, which will help protect it from hitting underwater obstructions as well as not sticking out from the front of the boat when stowed on the bow. The Minnow Fin attaches to your Minn Kota motor with a very simple 5 minute installation using only a screw driver. A very simple concept that really works extremely well! And it is very reasonably priced at only $127 per unit.
