Kyle & Shina Petersen
Sometimes leadership isn’t something you go looking for—it finds you.
When the future of Riverhawks Youth Football & Cheer became uncertain, Kyle and Shina were asked to step in. What started as a conversation about helping quickly became something much bigger. As Kyle puts it, “The call came, and we answered.”
Kyle is a former Navy nuclear submariner, a father, and a lifelong athlete. He played football for much of his life and was part of four championship teams—three in football and one in wrestling. His experiences in the military, athletics, and fatherhood have shaped the way he approaches leadership: with commitment, responsibility, teamwork, and a willingness to show up when people are counting on him.
Shina is a mother, a middle school special education teacher, and someone who has spent much of her life serving others through nonprofit organizations, education, and her community. She believes deeply in what sports can teach kids beyond the field—perseverance, teamwork, confidence, responsibility, and how to keep going when something is hard.
When Kyle and Shina realized just how much the Riverhawks program needed someone to step forward, they felt an overwhelming sense of responsibility. They took a leap of faith, jumped in with both feet, and committed to building something these athletes and families could be proud of. Together they have 5 children and want to continue to make this community impacted by youth sports.
For Shina, that includes a special passion for growing our cheer program and helping it become one of the best in the Tri-Cities. For both of them, though, the bigger goal is the same: to create an organization where kids are supported, challenged, encouraged, and given the opportunity to experience everything that makes youth sports so special.
They didn’t necessarily plan on leading the Riverhawks—but sometimes the best stories start with simply being willing to answer the call.
