Panthers win game one and drop game two in Section 6A play...
Game One vs Upsala
The Panthers got the #2 seed in the Section 6A tournament, and after a first round bye, the Panthers would face Upsala. The Cardinals would come out ready to rock, scoring three runs on three hits, taking advantage of a couple Panther miscues. Alyssa Revering would settle into the circle nicely after a rocky start not allowing a base runner until the fifth inning. The Panther offense wouldn’t let Upsala hold the lead for too long as they put up three runs of their own after a single and two walks loaded the bases. Alyssa Revering would then lace a single and earn herself two RBIs. Evy Grinager was then pushed across the plate with an Amelia Van Batavia sacrifice fly. The top of the second was led off with a Sydney Lorine single with her advancing to second as the Cardinal defender had a hard time corralling the ball. After advancing to third on a pass ball, Brooke Schilling put the ball on the ground which allowed Lorine to score. Anna Helling got the offense rolling in the third with a home run over the left field fence! Bri Skoglund would follow up with a nice single and would eventually make her way to third base and score on a Sydney Lorine sacrifice fly. Alyssa Revering added one run in the fourth with a shot over the left-center field fence. The Lady Panthers added five more in the fifth inning after a lead off Anna Helling double, who was hit in by a Sydney Lorine single. After a beautiful sacrifice bunt by Brooke Schilling, Henlee Mrnak and Evy Grinager would hit back to back singles with Mrnak pushing Lorine across the plate. After a Revering walk, Amelia Van Batavia would deliver a two out single pushing two Panthers across the plate. The Cardinals would make an attempt in the top of the sixth scoring two runs, but the Panthers had other plans. Three consecutive singles by Lily Steidl, Anna Helling, and Bri Skoglund would ignite the offense. After a Lorine sacrifice fly scoring one, Brooke Schilling, Henlee Mrnak, and Evy Grinager would string three hits together with Grinager’s being a double that would push the fifteenth run across the plate ending the game 15-5 in the bottom of the sixth. The Panthers would rack up eighteen hits in the game! Alyssa Revering would go the distance on the mound pitching six innings, allowing five runs on five hits, while striking out six Cardinal batters.
Game Two vs West Central Area
The Panthers would see WCA in game two of the night, and as WCA showed us during the season, took the lead with a two run home run on the top of the first. The Panthers didn’t let that get under their skin as Evy would draw a lead off walk in the second, followed by another Alyssa Revering home run to tie the game 2-2! The third inning was led off with a Bri Skoglund double, then a dandy of a bunt was laid down by Sydney Lorine causing an errant throw scoring Skoglund from second with Lorine making her way to third base on the play. Lorine would then score after WCA would try to catch her being pesky at third, but an errant throw would allow her to score giving the Panthers a 4-2 lead. Evy Grinager would keep the Knights bats cold, but a two out HBP led to a few Knight hits, putting our girls down 6-4. The Panthers would muster up a threat in the bottom of the sixth with Brooke Schilling reaching on an error from a too hard to handle grounder, moved to second by a Henlee Mrnak sacrifice bunt, then took third on a perfectly timed delayed steal. However, the Panther offense just couldn’t get her across the plate. Grinager would do her part the rest of the game putting goose eggs on the WCA side of the board, but the Panthers couldn’t find a way to pick at the lead giving WCA the win with a final score of 6-4. The Panther offense manufactured their runs on only two hits. Evy Grinager pitched all seven against a high powered offense and did an amazing job keeping the Panthers in striking distance all game. Grinager would give up six runs on only four hits while fanning two Knight batters. The Panther defense played their best defense of the year tonight. In game two, Henlee Mrnak, Bri Skoglund, and Anna Helling connected for a 4-6-3 double play, and later had another double play (1-4-3) started by Evy Grinager, to Henlee Mrnak and over to Anna Helling at first base which was also ruled obstruction as the WCA runner did not give way to Mrnak making the throw to first base.
The Panthers will take on New York Mills on Tuesday, 5/26 in the elimination bracket. Good luck ladies!!
