Your child does not want to play team sports. And you are wondering what that says about him.

Nothing is wrong with him.

In this video, Master Ko explains why that pattern almost never means what parents think it means. A team asks a child to do a hard thing in public, on a clock, in front of other parents, before he is any good at it. For a lot of children that is fine. For a careful child, it teaches him one thing. The safest way to not fail in front of everybody is to not try in front of everybody.

So he goes quiet. He stands at the back. He says he does not like it.

That is almost never a lack of interest. It is protection.

Master Ko covers why pushing harder and lowering the bar both make it worse, why Ko Martial Arts shut down its competition team eight years ago, and what a child like this actually needs before he will start trying again.

If you would like your child to try one lesson, book an Intro to KOMA. Small group, and we will run it one on one if your child is not ready for a group.

We are honored to share moments like this with our students.

This is how real confidence is built. By doing hard things, with an instructor who cares enough to coach your child until they do it on their own.

Every parent wants their child to be confident. Very few realize confidence is not something you hand a child. It is something they earn, usually right after the moment they wanted to give up.
She missed. She reset. She missed again. She adjusted her foot, turned her hip, and finally stopped holding back.
Then the board broke.
That is what we are actually building here. The board is just proof.

Three years old is not too young to break boards! What they really break is the belief that they are too little to do hard things. ๐Ÿ‘Š

"I've got T. rex arms."

Most instructors would have said "straighten your arms" for the fifth time and moved on.

Mrs. Freeman said "no dinosaur hands" and suddenly the whole class understood exactly what she meant.

Big. Small. Humongous. Throw it on the floor. None of that is in a textbook. All of it works, because she is teaching the student in front of her instead of teaching at her.

Our students learn their forms. They also learn that the adult in the room is paying attention to who they are.
