The Orrville High School cross country teams battled both a competitive field and extreme heat Wednesday evening at the Lee Sternberg Invitational at East Canton High School. Competing in the Big School Division, the Red Riders showed plenty of grit and determination as temperatures hovered around 90 degrees during the meet.
The heat played a significant role in race conditions and finish times, making the effort shown by Orrville’s runners even more impressive.
The Red Rider boys had a strong showing, with all three Orrville runners who competed finishing among the top 20 and earning medals. Parker Hochstetler led the way for Orrville, finishing the 5K course in 19:02. Logan Lovette crossed the line in 20:16, followed closely by teammate Jacob Crawford in 20:26.
Orrville’s girls also turned in a strong performance, with seven runners earning top-20 medals. Brielle Kendrick led the Red Riders in 26:08, followed by Elise Martin in 27:48 and Abby Severe in 28:01. Maddie Carter finished in 27:28, while Sarah Grace Miyash*ta crossed the line in 29:00. Kayleigh Lierer finished in 29:45, and Kinsley Martin rounded out Orrville’s medalists with a time of 30:33.
Also competing for the Red Rider girls were Kenadi Gray (32:07), Serenity Feliciano (32:25), and Madison Hilty (34:37).
With the extreme heat directly impacting race times, Wednesday’s meet was less about the clock and more about competing with toughness. The Red Riders responded to the challenging conditions with grit, patience, and determination, placing 10 runners in the top 20 of their respective races.
Orrville will return to competition at the Smithie Invitational on Tuesday, September 8.
