Before Gary Player became one of golf’s greatest champions, he once slept in the sand at St Andrews because he couldn’t afford a room.
In 1955, Player was just 19 years old and making his first trip from South Africa to Britain as a young professional.
There were no sponsorship deals, private flights or luxury hotels waiting for him.
Player later said his father, who worked in a South African gold mine, gave him £200 for the trip and even went into overdraft to help him chase the opportunity.
When Player arrived near St Andrews, he was trying to make that money last.
He couldn’t find an affordable place to stay, so he put on his waterproof clothing and spent the night outside. In one telling, he described sleeping in the dunes. In another, he said he found a bunker and slept there.
Either way, the point is the same.
One of the future legends of the game was beginning his professional journey with barely enough money to travel, let alone live comfortably.
Four years later, Player won his first major at the 1959 Open Championship.
That victory was only the beginning.
He would go on to win nine major championships, become one of only a handful of players to complete the career Grand Slam, and build a career that included victories all over the world.
What makes the story memorable isn’t that sleeping in a bunker somehow made him a champion.
It’s what it says about how uncertain the beginning was.
Today we know Gary Player as a golf icon.
In 1955, he was simply a teenager from South Africa taking a massive gamble on himself, traveling thousands of miles from home with limited money and no guarantee that professional golf would work out.
There’s something every golfer can take from that.
The beginning of a great journey rarely looks impressive.
Sometimes it looks like struggling, improvising and doing whatever you can to give yourself another chance to keep going.
Gary Player eventually lifted nine major championship trophies.
But long before any of them, there was a night in Scotland when he didn’t even have a bed.
That’s quite a long way from a bunker to the Hall of Fame. ⛳
