The Ogle County 4‑H Hippology Team traveled to the State Hippology Contest this past weekend — we’re so proud of their achievements! Hippology is the study of horses. The competition includes a written exam and hands‑on stations to identify feed, breeds, skeletal anatomy, and more.

Our team is doing the Headon’s Meats fundraiser again this year to help us raise the funds for new tack, and even cooler experiences for a larger team this year. We are so excited to be offering these delicious products again. Even better-this year, they will be available before Memorial Day weekend (May 16th)! ONE WEEK until 2026 tryouts! We’ve got such a fun group of riders so far this year and we are so excited to add some more to our team! If you’ve been considering joining our team for Tuesday practices, and some parades and competitions, we can’t wait to see you there. Bring a horse and come show us you can safely perform an individual pattern at the walk/trot/lope. Never done drill? That’s okay! We can teach you what you need to know! This is a great experience for both horse and rider, teaching skills and building further upon your horsemanship and sportsmanship skills. And not to mention-it’s FUN! We have some really cool upcoming events scheduled!

We had a great time getting ready for our Penny Carnival debut! This will be the first time in a long time(possibly ever!) that the drill team will have a game there! Come visit our super fun game with your kids or grandkids on March 7th from 5-8 pm at the Blackhawk Center in Oregon! Support not only our team but also the rest of Ogle County 4-H! Tickets will be 50 for $10, or 25 cents per game! Games are provided by our county 4-Hers and it’s a great time for kids of all ages.

Today also marks 2 weeks until 2026 tryouts! Make sure to mark your calendars for anyone interested! We’d love to see you there :)

Coaches Teddy and Sara enjoyed visiting with aged-out 2025 drill team rider Molly today and getting to watch her IHSA ride. Not only did she do great and win her class, she also sported her drill team buckle! It was so fun to watch her and it has been a joy to watch her continuosly grow as a horse woman. Congrats on a great ride, Molly! Blackhawk is lucky to have you!

We would like to extend a big “Thank You!” to the Rock River Trail and Horseman Association for their support of our team! This association has supported our team in a multiple ways, and we are truly appreciative! From allowing us to perform and carry the flag at their events to monetary donations, they are truly impacting our members. Support like this from a large group of horsemen and horsewomen means a lot to us!
