MEET THE DRIVER
“The Rookies” Episode 2 - 2026

Larry Baker 39 years old

Q - Where are you from/where did you grow up?
Larry - Born, raised, and live in Corvallis OR.

Q - What’s your number, who picked it, and why?
Larry - #28 is a house/team number for Moxie Motorsports.

Q - Outside of racing, what hobbies do you enjoy?
Larry - Racing has been a huge part of my life for 20 years, but I also love fishing and traveling.

Q - What got you into kart racing?
Larry - My team owner, Cory Penfold, invited me out to Marion Creek Speedway and let me test out a speedway kart and I was hooked. Ran every weekend.

Q - How old were you when you first drove anything with a motor (not limited to racing)?
Larry - Ironically enough when I was about 12, my older brother DJ had a couple of VERY homemade go carts. We would rip them up and down grove street in Lebanon until they broke or we ran out of gas.

Q - Do you have a favorite professional driver?
Larry - I always answer this the same.. RIP Dale Sr #3.. the best to ever do it. My current favorite driver is Cleetus McFarland AKA Garrett Mitchell. That guy can drive anything.

Q - Do you have any pre-race rituals, superstitions or quirks?
Larry - I have developed a ritual before each race.. as I get strapped into my car, I need to get a fist bump from my crew and kids and they tell me “don’t suck” and I promise to try not to.

Q - What’s your (current) favorite TV show or movie?
Larry - I’m a HUGE fan of Taylor Sheridan and his Yellowstone series. (1883, 1923, Yellowstone, Dutton Ranch) and I’m a big fan of his other project ‘Landman’ with Billy Bob Thornton. Great show!

Q - Dirt or asphalt?
Larry - If there’s a racecar on it.. I’m a fan of it.

Q - Do you have any advice to someone who potentially wants to race?
Larry - Be prepared to either LOVE it.. or HATE it. Racing is 95% work, and 5% racing.. but that 5% is like a drug.

Bonus Question (optional)
Q - If you could go viral on social media for anything of your choice, what would it be?
Larry - Im not sure I’d ever want to go viral or be famous. I’m just a guy who loves his close family, kids and friends and loves to go fast. If that made me go viral, so be it.

Well, another great day for racing. The turnout was a little light this week, but the karts were fast, and the competition was great with all 9 karts qualifying within roughly a half a second of each other. Elijah Finn came in with the fast time at 11.544 seconds, and Ron Davis crossed the line 9th at 12.052.

Congratulations to WPCK rookie Aly Garrett on her first heat race win while holding an amazing line preventing both Caiden Marontate and Elijah Finn, who were riding her tail from start to finish, from having a chance to get around her. It was a great race and a well deserved win. In Heat race #2, Tim Freer ran away with it pulling a pretty big lead over the competition.

The Trophy dash saw Tim Freer cross the line first over a very tight field, just 0.298 seconds ahead of Caiden Marontate.

The main event saw a new winner with Larry Baker taking over first place after a mechanical failure for Elijah Finn midway through the race and taking home the victory over a hard charging Tim Freer who had to work himself from the back, but just ran out of track. 40 laps just wasn't enough for Tim over the amazing line Larry found on his way to victory lane.

Another week, and more great racing from the WPCK. We'll be back in action next Sunday for some more racing from the ONLY NASCAR sanctioned kart racing series in the world at Willamette Speeday on the always exciting "Lil' W***y" kart track.

MEET THE DRIVER
"The Rookies" Episode 1 - 2026

Aly Garrett

Q - Where are you from/where did you grow up?

Aly - I grew up in Redding, CA. I currently live in Yelm, WA though.

Q - What’s your number, who picked it, and why?

Aly - 34; it’s a family pattern. Great grandpa was 64, grandpa 54, dad 44, so I took on 34.

Q - Outside of racing, what hobbies do you enjoy?

Aly - Watching my girls play soccer, hiking, line dancing, going to baseball games.. anything outside really.

Q - What got you into kart racing?

Aly - I grew up around the race track. When my dad got hurt and couldn’t race, I asked him to get me a kart.

Q - How old were you when you first drove anything with a motor (not limited to racing)?

Aly - 10, when I started racing caged karts in Red Bluff.

Q - Do you have a favorite professional driver?

Aly - I like to root for any underdog. Growing up I was a big time Bobby Labonte fan.

Q - Do you have any pre-race rituals, superstitions or quirks?

Aly - Have to listen to rock music on the way to the track, wrist band always on the left, and my dad and I have our fist bump ritual before I go out.

Q - What’s your (current) favorite TV song?

Aly - Oh man, I’m so indecisive. Show or song? Either way, favorite show is The Pitt. Favorite song; my current feel good song is Sound Farmer by Jerry Baccardi.

Q - Dirt or asphalt?

Aly - As my dad always says “Dirt is for racing, asphalt is for getting there."

Q - Do you have any advice to someone who potentially wants to race?

Aly - Find a good group to race with. People who are willing to help out and not just out there to win, will make the experience that much more enjoyable. Also… have no fear.

Bonus Question...

Q - If you could be the best in the world at any one single thing, not based off of money or fame, what would it be?

Aly - Maybe not “the best,” but I’m a Nurse Practitioner as my day job and I would love to make an impactful change in our healthcare system. One that makes healthcare accessible and a system with providers who still care about the well being of patients.

Well, it was a rough night for several of our drivers. These races can be tough on the motors running flat out for prolonged periods of time, and a few were lost last night.

Congratulations to first time WPCK driver (but very experienced racer) Tony Brakeall on his come from behind main event win driving the Misguided Racing no. 85, getting past Caiden Marontate with two laps to go. Both had a great battle with one of the original WPCK big track racers, Mike Kau making his return to the series.

Karts were turning some good laps, with Caiden Marontate putting down a 19.511 lap in the trophy dash. For reference, that was faster than several of the Hornets and a few of the Street Stocks times throughout the night...all on a single-cylinder Harbor Freight motor.

Now it's time for teams to refresh, rebuild and return to action next Sunday back on the famed and fast "Lil' W***y" kart track.
