Today the Spartans got up early to make the trek to Newell for the sectional golf meet. The task at hand was simple: make the top three teams and advance to the district meet next week.
Similar to prior meets, the guys got off to a slow start. After the first nine holes, the team’s total of 170 was in last place but were only two strokes behind the second place team. The second time around the nine hole course offered slightly more challenging conditions as the winds picked up and the course dried out. Keagan was one of the few to improve upon his first round, shooting 41-37. His 78 was good enough for a third place finish individually. Evan added an 82 and Xander an 84. With three of the top 13 individual scores, things looked good for the team to move on. Seniors Chance and Colton were among those who would struggle on the second nine finishing with scores of 99 and 101, respectively. As scorecards were turned in, it seemed apparent that the Spartans would see their season come to an end. However, sophomore Landon Johnson would finish with a 95 and pull the Spartans into position to be tied for third place with Glidden-Ralston. The tiebreaker would come down to the fifth golfer’s score. Chance’s 99 was good enough to beat G-R’s fifth golfer by 25 strokes—ensuring the entire team would move on the the district meet Monday in Council Bluffs.
The team learned a lot today, especially the importance of staying focused for 18 holes, to keep grinding and battle for every important stroke.
The team now shifts focus to Monday’s meet, where the top three teams out of the 12 will advance to the State tournament. It should prove a very formidable challenge as the district shapes up to be the most talented in the State.

Today in Lemars the Western Valley Conference awarded medals to the members of their first and second team all conference golfers. Eval Lander finished in fifth place in the conference, with the top eight players earning first team all conference.

The varsity boys traveled to Lemars today to participate in the Western Valley Conference tournament. The weather proved to be some of the best of the season and Willow Creek proved to be a challenge for the Spartans. Putting was a bit of an Achilles heel for the team. They were at a bit of a disadvantage, practicing daily on the slowest putting greens in the conference and then trying adjust to the quick rolling greens of Willow Creek.
Keagan Wiggs was able to grind his way to an 80, good enough for a top ten finish, in seventh place. Evan Lander scored an 84 after a slow start and Colton Griffith added a 90. Chance Richards and Xander Theobald tallied 96 apiece. The team total was three shots out of fourth place.
The boys look ahead to the Sectional golf tournament in Newell on Wednesday the 13th.

The Spartans traveled to Moville for the last conference meet of the regular season needing to perform well enough to earn a spot in the conference tournament Thursday in Lemars. The blustery conditions made the course very challenging.
As the scores came in, the tensions mounted in the clubhouse as there were a lot of golfers coming in with similar results.
Evan Lander finished tied for fourth on the day with a 41. It was a solid enough score to secure fifth place in the overall conference standings and first team all-conference. Keagan Wiggs and Xander Theobald added a pair of 46s, Chance Richards a 48, Colton Griffith a 49 and Landon Johnson a 51. The team total of 181 was good enough for fifth place on the day, earning sufficient points to move up into fifth place in the overall standings and a berth in the conference tournament on Thursday.
Playing on a challenging 18 hole course will provide a great opportunity for the squad to get ready for sectional play next week.

On May Day, we hosted a JV/varsity quad our last home meet of the year, as we honored our seven seniors on the boys team.
On the JV side, senior Carson Carrier led the way with a 43, followed by Casen Richards’ 46, senior Sylver McCall’s 49 and Blake Menish’s 51. The team total of 182 was good enough for a second place finish.
The varsity scores were grouped closely with Evan at 41, Keagan at 42, senior Xander Theobald at 44, and senior Colton Griffith at 45. The score of 172 was just two strokes out of second place on the meet.

*The seven seniors pictured are Tyler Johnston, Chance Richards, Carson Carrier, Colton Griffith, Braedon M**f, Xander Theobald and Sylver McCall. They are a special group to this golf coach for a few reasons. #1—there’s power in numbers. This is by far the largest senior class West Monona has had out for golf in a long time. I’m sure the parents of these seniors know #2–they are quite the group of characters. They have provided a lot of great entertainment and memories for me, each other, and their teammates over the years. #3–this is my fourth year as head coach so these guys are the first group I’ve had the opportunity to see grow up from freshmen to seniors.
I really appreciate each of them and the part each has played in the West Monona golf program. Congrats seniors, and best of luck to all of you in the future

Yesterday, 8 JV golfers traveled to Holstein for a conference meet. Tyler Johnston had the low round with a 46, followed by Kinnick Holverson’s 49. Carson Carrier and Braedon M**f added 50s for a team total of 195, good enough for third place in the meet.

The varsity conference meet was held in Sloan, a makeup from the originally scheduled April 7th meet. Senior Colton Griffith finished his last hole for par with a very difficult downhill two-putt from 20’ to lead the team with a 42. Evan Lander added a 42, Keagan Wiggs a 43, and Xander Theobald a 45. With very competitive golf again being played across the conference, the Spartans are now in sixth place in the conference standings. The team is in need of a good meet on Monday in Moville to qualify for the conference tournament next Thursday in Lemars.

Today (May 1) all Spartan golfers will be in action at the Onawa Country Club with an early 2:30 tee time. We will be celebrating our Senior golfers. Stop out to catch the boys and girls in action.
