Swimming is comprised of several key skills that are strung together to create strokes. For example, Freestyle, the most basic of the strokes, is the combination of pulling water with the arms and kicking with the feet, all while rotating the full body to accommodate for breathing every third stroke. The technique becomes more complex at the walls for the start and the turns. When we isolate the specific skills and sharpen them, our overall stroke becomes faster and easier! Swimming was founded as a mode of transportation. Much like walking or running, swimming uses what we have, our bodies and hopefully a pair of goggles :), to move us across a body of water. The ability to swim is a gift that not everyone has and one that most certainly saves lives. Do your kids feel confident in the water? Practice and knowledge of key skills can be the difference between fear and enjoyment of the pool, for both parents and kids!

The most famous and most efficient stroke: Freestyle. Freestyle, formerly known as Front Crawl, got its name because it was the stroke most people chose in the ‘Freestyle’ event, in which swimmers could choose any technique to get across the pool or open body of water. For hundreds of years, swimmers and lifeguards have been using this stroke to beat records and save lives because of its speed. Want to harness this speed in your stroke? I would love to work with your kids to improve their efficiency in this stroke to enable them to speed through the water!

Breaststroke is a funky stroke. With the funny breathing position and frog kick, it is an easy one to get wrong. Trust me, I have some pretty hilarious photos of me swimming Breaststroke. The facial expressions are the best! But it doesn’t have to feel as odd as it looks. With some simple drills and practice, Breaststroke can be a breeze!

Backstroke is a crowd favorite because you can breathe the whole time. Unlike Butterfly, where breathing takes extra effort, Backstroke is made for a steady breathing pattern. Butterfly. It is one of the hardest strokes to master because of its rhythm and demand for abdomen and arm strength. Fortunately, there are drills and exercises that build up these skills to improve overall speed (and enjoyment ;)). Is Butterfly your little one's favorite stroke? Hi swimmers! My name is Kate Jensen! I have been in the swimming world since I started swimming at an Omaha community pool when I was 7. Since then I have swam for club teams and for Marian High School, including for the State winning team in 2020! I have worked as a swim coach and a swim lessons teacher for the past few summers.
