Do you match the energy or set the standard?
It’s easy to get swept up in the prevailing energy of the masses, to adopt the fear, frustration, and urgency that have become the norm.
But why in the world would you choose to be that athlete when you know you don’t have to be?
Left untrained, the mind defaults to familiar patterns: negativity, scarcity, and stress.
A race gets announced, but the course hasn’t been released. The impatience builds. The stress response kicks in before you even know what you’re dealing with.
A race gets canceled, and before there’s even a plan, we’re already convinced we’re going to get screwed. Instead of focusing on what we want to happen next, we pour our energy into everything we don’t want.
Your TrainingPeaks numbers aren’t green, and suddenly, you’d rather not look. Avoidance is one of the mind’s favorite tactics.
But what happens when you can’t have the answers your mind is demanding?
This is where knowing yourself becomes essential to discernment.
Can you recognize when you’re responding to what’s actually happening and when you’re reacting to the story you’ve already built around it?
Can you recognize your patterns before they dictate your next move?
How you respond to uncertainty, setbacks, and discomfort affects how you train, how you make decisions, and how you perform.
Setting the standard doesn’t mean ignoring the data or pretending you’re unbothered.
We’re not suggesting that. We’re suggesting we can take responsibility for the mind we bring to the experience.
Cultivate the awareness to see clearly, the discernment to know what the moment calls for, and the discipline to choose your response rather than simply absorb the energy around you.
You train your body to respond under pressure. Are you training your mind to do the same?
This is the work we explored in today’s Endurance Mindset livestream inside Endurance Squad. We train the mind alongside the body because the athlete you become is shaped by more than the miles you put in.
If you’re ready to do this work, come join us inside Endurance Squad. Let’s train.
