Students for a Free Palestine (SFP) is a student organization at Oberlin College whose main goal is a free Palestine. We will work for the decolonization of Palestinian land, the Right of Return for all Palestinians, and adherence to international law. We oppose occupation and settler colonialism, and call for internationalism in order to create freedom for Palestinians. Our primary short-term tac

tic is to follow the call of Palestinian civil society for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS). We are following the call of Palestinian civil society, who ten years ago asked people worldwide to work for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions. We are not looking for another peace talk or border proposal that further dwarfs historic Palestine into a disjointed piece of land. We believe justice in Palestine must occur in congruence with movements against police brutality and mass incarceration, gentrification, or militarization. We know that it isn’t a solidarity of just rhetoric: law enforcement deployed in Ferguson–the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Dept–received training from the Israeli security forces in recent years. SFP has been active for non-consecutive years since the 1980s, and is aligned with National Students for Justice in Palestine. On campus, SFP hosts speakers, leads teach-ins, and organizes for BDS. Our main goal is for Oberlin College to divest from six corporations who profit and perpetuate the occupation of Palestine: Elbit Systems, Group 4 Securicor, Caterpillar, Soda Stream, Veolia, and Hewlett-Packard. These multi-national corporations were chosen because they also militarize the US-Mexico border wall, create drones and surveillance technologies in prisons.

Oberlin Students for a Free Palestine and Oberlin Jewish Voice for Peace stand in solidarity with Palestine and condemn the violent attempts at ethnic cleansing in Sheikh Jarrah and all of Palestine. We want to bring awareness to the historical Zionist settler colonial project that has systematically eliminated Palestinian lives and culture since its inception. This is yet another example of the Israeli government and Israeli Defense Forces forcefully removing Palestinian inhabitants from their historical—and current—homes. The Nakba is ongoing. Since 1948, Palestinians have been forced to resist occupation and apartheid that has left most of Palestine’s historical population seeking refuge. We call for our fellow students, faculty, and staff at Oberlin to loudly and unequivocally support Palestinians suffering from Zionist colonialism. We ask the institution and community of Oberlin to live up to our reputation by joining the call to save Sheikh Jarrah and to not be progressive except when it comes to Palestine. Oberlin must cut all financial ties with Israel and join the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement to ensure that Palestine is not erased.

JVP and SFP stand in solidarity with UAW workers and unequivocally oppose outsourcing, layoffs, and union busting. This May Day and every day, we want to celebrate the workers who are part of our community and deserve respect, support, and job security. The jobs of UAW workers are what keep this school running. It is unacceptable for the livelihoods of these community members to be used as bargaining chips by the Oberlin administration, when in reality, there is no Oberlin without UAW. From Palestine to Oberlin, we will fight until everyone is free from capitalism, neoliberalism, and settler colonialism.
