This is an excellent post about approaching kata with the proper spirit.

"When performing kata, one should fully put into it the kiai of confronting an opponent with a real sword, without the slightest negligence, treating not even a single breath carelessly, and should practice it accurately in accordance with the principles of the way of the sword.

What is to be valued in kata is not merely its movements, but truly its spirit. If kiai is not fully developed and filled, and carefulness of mind is lacking, then however skillfully and deftly one performs it, it is nothing more than dance or gymnastics."

- Takano Sasaburo Sensei, from his book Kendo (1915)

[Note that kiai here does not mean a shout, as is commonly assumed in modern martial arts. It refers to the intense vitality that wells up within the integrated body-mind].
