Because Hatem Muhammed (Freshman, NUCC) won the Northern New England Golden Gloves championship last month, he was invited to the All New England Golden Gloves tournament in Lowell, MA. Yesterday Hatem and Nick Smollett (Sophomore, NUCC) drove down for the fight.

Hatem lost a decision against a more experienced fighter, who had been boxing for years. Despite that, Hatem (who has only been boxing since last semester) was able to go the distance and put up a hell of a fight. The kid has no quit in him. It was amazing, and we are incredibly proud of him.

A nursing major, US Army ROTC scholarship recipient, and a warrior in the ring, Hatem represents the best of Norwich.

Nick Smollett did a great job as a Second, learning how to corner a fighter.

Proud beyond words of freshman Hatem Muhammad for winning the Nothern New England Golden Gloves.

It was a barn burner of a fight against an undefeated hometown favorite in Somersworth, NH.

Hatem was a warrior who represented Norwich well.

Please consider a donation to support our fighters. The boxing team is entirely supported by club dues and generous alumni and friends. We try our best to keep dues low, to allow any student to box, regardless of their financial situation.

But the costs add up. Registration fees for USA Boxing, gear and equipment, and travel/hotels/food.

This is the clubs second year, and we are trying to grow the program. Your donation will help support our fighters representing Norwich.

Last night was Day One for new fighters. Club President (Brynn) gave an introduction to some fundamentals. Everyone had a great attitude. A special guest coach (Mack) made an appearance.

It’s a busy week for Norwich Boxing! Old fighters met last night for a rainy jog, orientation, and assessment. They will have their first practice Wednesday. Two days rest and a PT test Saturday morning.

New fighters start tonight for an introduction and first class.

Fitness boxing!!!

In our effort to live the Norwich Guiding Values, we want to explore offering Fitness Boxing classes this summer to the Norwich and Northfield community.

Workouts would be held Tuesday’s and Thursday’s from 12:00-1:00. Supervised by a USA Boxing certified coach. They would be no-contact, and follow a similar programming that our fighters use to train.

They are completely scaleable, regardless of your fitness level. Can’t do 5 jumping jacks? No problem! The thought of mountain climbers and bag drills make your head spin? No sweat! Get out of breath putting your socks on? We feel you! Don’t know the difference between a jab and a cross? We’ll teach you!

We want to provide a judgment free, fun space for adults to make some friends and get the heart pumping, with the added benefit of setting the foundations for self defense.

Classes would be free! We will have a suggested donation per class to the Norwich Boxing Club to help our amazing fighters continue to train and travel.

Next years leadership had a Coach’s Dinner to talk about strategy for the next season.

We’re happy to announce Gabriel Williams as Team Captain. Brynn Lecakes as the new President and John Lemos as Vice President.

What an amazing group of student-athletes. Looking forward to 2022-2023.

The origins of boxing can be traced back to Ancient Mesopotamia from the Sumerian civilization. The earliest known depiction of boxing comes from a Sumerian relief from the early third or second millennium BCE. It depicts two men without gloves, facing each other with their arms bent and fists clinched.

Other ancient cultures boxed bare fi**ed and the Minoans appear to be the first civilization to use boxing gloves. Boxing first appeared in the Olympics at the 23rd Olympiad in 688 BCE and the boxers wound leather thongs around their hands for protection. Modern boxing evolved from 16th and 18th-century prizefights in Great Britain.

Norwich also has a long boxing tradition. We snapped these pictures today of an old bronze plaque in Plumley Armory.
