The calligraphy for “Karate Ni Sente Nashi” hangs at the back of our dojo. It translates, roughly, to “No first strike in karate.”

Kids, especially, can have a hard time understanding how this idea connects to class behavior expectations. They’re here to learn to be a ninja, and so is everyone else in class — why are we stopping them from play-punching and silly slap fights?

Visit our blog to read about how this saying intersects with our dojo courtesies and our approach to practice: https://northamptonkarate.com/blog/karate-ni-sente-nashi-in-the-dojo

There's a saying that I've been thinking about lately. I've seen various versions attributed to various sources, but they all go something like this: "Under pressure, you don't rise to the occasion, you sink to the level of your training. That's why we train so hard."

We strive to be fully in the room, mind and body, during practice.

We talk about a kata, we go over it step by step, we break it down, we look at it from a hundred different angles, we try bunkai, we repeat it. We do it over and over, thousands of times, to hammer into our subconscious and our muscles what we want to achieve with each move.

This repetition is a key element, but it is a particular type of repetition.

This isn't like when you're on the stair machine huffing and puffing, stepping over and over, but making your shopping list in your head at the same time. Though you want to get to a point beyond laboriously cataloguing each part of the move as you do it, your mind must still stay in the practice, in the dojo.

Our practice includes talking about the history, culture, etiquette, and philosophical underpinnings, and these aren't just extras; they are important to our understanding and ability.

When you're memorizing second kata, for example, take a moment to note who created it and for what purpose. Or when you're in the trenches of 2 years of naihanchi kata as a ni kyu and ik kyu, ponder the calligraphy pair of nin tai and sho jin and how these two qualities are helping you make it through this difficult training.

An assailant is unlikely to demand that you define maai, but understanding what it means and how we think about it in relationship to yakusoku kumite, for example, will matter.

When you commit to being fully engaged with your practice, you prepare yourself to act under pressure, whether that pressure is test day or an altercation where you need to defend yourself.

We're 👏coming 👏 back👏

We loved being part of First Night Northampton so much last year that we're doing it again this Wednesday: Same time (4-4:45 p.m.), same place (33 Hawley St. in Eli's Room), and above all, same energy!

Folks who attend our demo will get a sampling of what our practice looks like, and we'll have an opportunity for them to try some moves for themselves as well.

It's free with your button, so we hope to see you there!

Sometimes, good teaching is about knowing when to stop teaching.
Recently, I watched one of our kids class students who's been with us for about a year teach a brand new student how to do walking punch across the deck, with a turn at the end to go back the other way.
Senior Kid knows how to position your hands, to step before launching the punch, how to turn so you don't throw yourself off balance, etc. He was sharing it all with the new kid. New Kid was doing a good job of following along until the turn. Utter confusion. Senior Kid tried again. Chaos.
Senior Kid took a moment, and then refocused on the hand position and the timing of the step. He stopped talking about the turn.
Senior Kid saw that New Kid was too overwhelmed to absorb information about the turn. He recognized that he didn't have the skills to reframe the information in a way New Kid could understand.
Senior Kid knew it was time to let it go and instead focus on supporting the parts of the technique where he WAS able to help New Kid improve. Instead of frustrating them both, Senior Kid created a moment where he and New Kid could both feel success.
These kids, by the way, are 8 years old.
I'm trying to take a lesson from their example.

No count, just awareness.
Sometimes, we practice karate in unison, without giving a count.
It looks cool, but it's not a party trick — it's an opportunity to practice zanshin, a state of total awareness and readiness to react.
We use our knowledge of the kata, the sounds of the movements, and what we see in our full and peripheral vision to be synchronized with each other.
Training to be that aware of our surroundings and the people around us is a skill that not only improves our mental focus, it can help keep us safe.
