We study Tae Kwon Do in the Ji Do Kwan style as practiced by Choi Bong Young, a Korean master who taught for many years in a dojang in Oakland, California. Our interpretation of Tae Kwon Do is beautiful, technically rigorous, and can be used as an effective form of self defense. We have a serious but friendly community of people who like to think and work hard in pursuing this uniquely satisfying form of training.

TIDBITS ABOUT JIDOKWAN
■JIDOKWAN was a driving force in the creation and development of Taekwondo in early days
■Under the leadership of the Korean Taekwondo Association, Jidokwan significantly contributed to the creation and establishment of Kukkiwon, along with other KWANs. JIDOKWAN signed "The Unification Proclamation.
■Two JIDOKWAN Masters were members of the 6-member committee that formulated the Taegeuk Poomsae.
■JIDOKWAN invented Taekwondo sparring competition. However, under the leadership of Grand Master Chong Woo Lee, the first Vice-President of Kumkiwon, JIDOKWAN adamantly opposed the integration of Taekwondo into the Olympics. Until today, JIDOKWAN is opposed to Sport Taekwondo in order for Taekwondo to remain a Martial Art as conceived. JIDOKWAN is about Traditional Taekwondo.
■JIDOKWAN, along with other KWANs are the custodians of Traditional Taekwondo. This is a huge responsibility.
■JIDOKWAN created the "K-Tigers", the world-renowned Kukkiwon Demonstration Team.
■GM Seung Wan Lee (9th. DAN) is the current President of JIDOKWAN and former President of Kukkiwon. He signs the Black Belt certificates.
■By virtue of "The Unification Programation" signed by the KWANs to create Kukkiwon, Jidokwan follows the Dan promotion rules and regulations of Kukkiwon although the syllabus of a typical JIDOKWAN school is structural along its philosophy and traditions.
■JIDOKWAN headquarters is in Seoul (South Korea).
■In light of above, a JIDOKWAN certificate carries the weight of the unique and rich history and traditions of this important KWAN. Its a privilege thats reserved to the few that can survive a tough training programme with a clear LINEAGE that goes all the to the founder GM Chung San Sup.
■WE ARE NOT ATHLETES, WE ARE NOT FIGHTERS. WE ARE MARTIAL ARTISTS..

Here’s an excellent interview by a guy who’s arguably the foremost western writer on Korean history, especially during the post WWII period. If you’re interested in the roots of the Korean War, and approaches to peace on the peninsula/reunification, this is a good up-to-the-minute perspective.

Four black belts from our school recently attended a special training seminar. Read about the field trip and learn two ways this kind of experience can enhance a traditional martial arts practitioner's understanding.

Having witnessed a long history of erratic behavior from the DPRK—with seeming breakthroughs followed by sudden and complete reversals—it may be hard to know quite what to make of this remarkable development. Whatever may come next, it’s a breathtaking moment in Korean history, and our school stands with the Korean people in celebrating this agreement with great optimism and hope. For anyone with an interest in Korean martial arts training, and who cares deeply about the land where their tradition was formed, we watch with wonder and goodwill. May this day be long remembered as a turning point for modern Korea.

North Korea's Kim Jong Un and South Korea's Moon Jae-in met at the border village of Panmunjom for the first inter-Koreas summit in more than a decade.

Read about our school's recent field trip to Chosun Taekwondo Academy in Warwick, New York for a seminar in traditional poomsae (forms or patterns). The half-day event was led by two distinguished Grandmasters, Doug Cook and Pablo Alejandro, both senior students of the late TKD legend, Grandmaster Richard Chun.

This article on how Thai Theravada Buddhist Monks understand the effects of video games on society is fascinating for its own sake. It's also relevant for why our Tae Kwon Do school doesn't participate in tournament competition: a thing that's not inherently bad has the potential for a slippery slope that undermines the positive benefits. Lots of interesting ideas here. . . check it out!
