About the AMC:
At

AMC, connecting you to the freedom and exhilaration of the outdoors is our calling. We invite and help people of all ages and abilities to explore and develop a deep appreciation of the natural world. AMC helps you get outdoors on your own, with family and friends, and through activities close to home and beyond. With chapters from Maine to Washington, D.C., including groups in Boston, New York City, and Philadelphia, you can enjoy activities like hiking, paddling, cycling, and skiing, and learn new outdoor skills. We offer advice, guidebooks, maps, and unique lodges, huts, and VMF camps like CRC to inspire your next outing. You will also have the opportunity to support our conservation advocacy and research, youth programming, and work maintaining 1,800 miles of trails. We invite you to join us in the outdoors. Our Mission:
Founded in 1876, the Appalachian Mountain Club promotes the protection, enjoyment, and understanding of the mountains, forests, waters, and trails of America’s Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. We believe these resources have intrinsic worth and also provide recreational opportunities, spiritual renewal, and ecological and economic health for the region. Because successful conservation depends on active engagement with the outdoors, we encourage people to experience, learn about, and appreciate the natural world.

Welcome to the world, new American Robin! Who knew a Conant Lodge window ledge was the perfect spot to build a nest and raise a family! During the busy AMC Boston Chapter 20s - 40s Weekend, we hung towels inside the Lodge window to keep the robin family from being constantly startled by the inside activity. Despite the heavy rain and wind Friday night the nest remained secure - whew! When we left on Sunday, the adult robin was still faithfully feeding the chick and keeping the remaining eggs warm. What will we find next weekend? More hatchlings? A nest full of hungry mouths? We can’t wait to see how the CRC robin story unfolds! Thanks for the great photo Ned!

Ode to opening Weekend

At the foot of Baldface in May,
Cold River Camp opened today!
The sled was recovered,
Our porch rediscovered,
And spring blooms chased the raindrops away.

The gardens awoke to the rake,
And furniture journeys did take.
The dishes all gleamed,
Cozy firelight beamed,
And laughter helped our dear camp awake!

Feasts by Zach and Maggie came with flair,
While Kate and Nathaniel wrangled with care.
Ella and Emma gave sunflowers bright,
Rocks were skipped in twilight,
Cheers to another wonderful year!

A huge thank you to all the volunteers who helped make the Cold River Camp Opening Weekend such a success. From misty mornings to cozy fires, gardens raked awake, furniture carried, dishes washed, porch conversations, river rock skipping, and countless laughs along the way — the weekend was full of the spirit that makes CRC so special.

Special thanks to Kate and Nathaniel for all the wrangling and keeping things moving, and to Bill for always being at the ready “just in case.” Zach and Maggie kept everyone well fed, Ella and Emma brightened Sunday with sunflowers, and every volunteer who pitched in helped bring camp back to life for another season.

Cold River Camp runs on community, generosity, hard work, and good humor - and this weekend was a wonderful reminder of that. Thank you all for making it such a great weekend.

Cold River Camp News!

As we look ahead to the upcoming summer season at AMC Cold River Camp, we want to share an important staffing update.

As we’ve previously communicated, after five years as Summer Manager, Emmy Holt has made the decision to step away from the role. We are so grateful for the care, energy, and commitment Emmy brought to CRC over the years, and we wish her all the very best in her next chapter.

We’ve been working thoughtfully and quickly to keep things running smoothly and to ensure a welcoming, well-supported season for our guests and staff. We’re pleased to share that a 2026 Summer Manager has been hired from within our community, Miranda Grover. Miranda brings a deep knowledge of CRC as she is a 5th generation camper, 4th generation committee member, 3rd generation Croo, and former assistant manager. Her familiarity with camp operations, culture, and traditions will help ensure continuity and a positive, enjoyable season. Cold River Camp is her favorite place and she’s excited to spend the summer in the shadow of South Baldface.

We are confident in the leadership team in place and in the strength of our staff. CRC will remain the special place it’s always been, rooted in community and tradition – and where that CRC magic lives on in time on the trails, around camp, and in the shared experiences you help create.

Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm. We look forward to a wonderful season together.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to our Committee Chair, Ozzy Osborne at [email protected].

We’ll see you on the porch!
