With a heavy heart, I would like to present to you
Our friend had passed away over the weekend and I wanted to showcase his magnificent style of frequent level changes, stance switching, feints and hand fighting to set up his shots.
He was a fierce competitor, valued training partner, an amazing coach and above all else, he was a selfless man whose life inspired all that he came across.
We will miss you Jay.

Here's a simple takedown from the back with one of my favorite finishes. I call it gutwrenching. Enjoy!

It's been awhile, thank you all for your patience. Today I present to you a nice low risk ankle pick.
You and your uke are same stance. Uke grabs near side lapel. You grab underneath his arm pit then stiff arm to prevent him from closing the distance.
Next you grab his sleeve holding your lapel and pull it down as you throw your shoulder over it.
Apply pressure to your opponents elbow with your shoulder to prevent him from pulling away. Pushing your chest inwards will also add more pressure to the Russian.
From here you shuffle step in and kick his thigh out of the way squaring up his stance.
Drop down grabbing his ankle pulling it towards you as you push him over with the stiff arm.
Next initiate your guard passing sequence.

Here's a on a lesson of off-balancing your opponent.
First rule is to always attack the front leg.
When you attack the front leg you disrupt his stance and force him into a new stance.
Then you can attack his new lead leg repeating the process.
Here I use an uchi-Mata off of an underhook to attempt to throw but he retains his balance.
I then drop my foot behind his ankle in an attempt to take him down by misplacing his balance via pushing him over his trapped foot.
Not every takedown will succeed but one can clearly see Jay's off-balancing with these techniques.
From here we can repeat the process of attacking the lead leg at a new angle, try a different method of attack by adding more corrections to these attempts or use different moves entirely since he has already shown great defense to it. The choice is yours.

The double leg trip is a safe choice for newer grapplers.
It teaches them to continue with their forward motion. A concept that I've noticed a lot of new grapplers struggle with which is to continue the drive forward till their opponent hits the ground.
Experienced grapplers: Inside tie> head snap > double leg > outside trip
New Grapplers: Shot penetration> drive the knee forward to the mat> outside trip.

One of my favorite single leg finishes!
This is from the last class, we had before the state emergency isolation/quarantine. Repost from
When I was in high school, I frequently attended many wrestling camps around the state and country. All of which provided me something new to add to my game.
Including this technique, from a wrestling camp that my high school wrestling coaches organized in Chillicothe, Ohio with several NCAA college wrestlers to which I still appreciate.
Focusing more on jiujitsu now, I still attend many seminars when they come nearby. During this isolation, I think of all instructors and places that I've had the chance to experience to which I am very grateful for.
What camps and seminars have you attended?
Please like, share and follow! Ps. It's my birthday!

To help keep everyone entertained while being quarantined, here is a short clip from our Friday the 13th video.
The Friday Killer comes in with a horizontal swing with his machete; the tori let's him swing once then immediately closes the distance. Tori then throws the uke to the ground and immediately disengages running away to safety.
Although this is for fun and entertainment, this is still a demonstration of a self-defense technique.
One that I must add a disclaimer:
That one should use said technique at their own discretion and risk. I personally wouldn't recommend trying to fight someone with a machete.
However, it is worth noting that both Judo and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu have weapon defensive techniques found in numerous books and this is a fun way to demonstrate said techniques.

Rule number one: always attack the lead leg.
If the lead leg moves backwards, attack the new lead leg.
Here is a demonstration of this principle utilizing the combinations of a sweep single to a high crotch and vice versa, high crotch to sweep single.

I drag, you drag, redrags! Good for jiujitsu better for dancing! Watch our latest story for music.
This is a fun counter to an armdrag. When they drag you, you drag them: you use their momentum against them at the end of the pull, pull their elbow to redrag. This does involve timing, so keep practicing.
