THE FIRST EVER ORIGINAL (OFFICIAL) IN- SCHOOL POKER CLUB (A MIND SPORT) Founded By: Maurice Engler Facebook Club Page Created By: Carl Thompson And Other Members The Math Club:
While at HSSIS, Maurice Engler began a Mathematics, Psychology, and Philosophy through Tournament Card play Poker Club for the high school students. The club meets at least once a week after school and usually plays Texa

s Holdem Poker tournaments for small prizes and a chance to make history on our now world-famous “tournament chart!” As well as receives planned lessons in math, psychology and philosophy. In 2009, the HSSIS team challenged and BEAT the Harvard Law School Poker Team, which had been written about in the NY Times, and were invited to Oxford University in the UK to represent the USA in an international poker tournament. Last year the Wall Street Journal took an interest in the Math Club and wrote a long article about us in their New York Regional section and online with an imbedded video. Today, thanks to the help and support of many other school workers, the club remains strong. There is a new club in a Connecticut school inspired by the WSJ piece, and we hope to meet them at Harvard in Spring of 2013 for a three-school tournament and college tour; as well as our usual end-of-year tournament at Pless Hall at NYU overlooking Washington Sq. The club boasts the last THREE school valedictorians as key members over the past three years! One is currently in his third year at Vassar University in Poughkeepsie NY. The club has also had numerous visits from celebrities and poker pros who remain friends of the HSSIS Math through Cardplay club.

General information

Our Mission: We want to continue the greatness and success of our poker club. We believe poker clubs should be more common in New York City Schools. There is much more to poker than gambling. It teaches students and adults how to read others, think critical in clutch situations, and analyze mistakes. *Three former valedictorians of Henry Street High School are members of the Poker Club. Playing poker in the poker club helps build character, analytical skills and better minds for anyone, especially when gambling isn’t involved.
