French apps like Duolingo often teach you comme ci, comme ça.

But in real everyday French, you’ll almost never hear French people answer like that.

More natural alternatives:

Bof = Meh
Ça peut aller = Could be better / I’m okay
Pas terrible = Not great (yes I know it’s confusing that « terrible » means great in French, depending on the intonation)
Ça va = I’m fine / I’m okay

And that last one is very French haha
Even when things aren’t going particularly well, we often still answer ça va.

José Manuel went from A2 to C1 in French.

Moving to France is exciting, but building a life there can be much harder than you expected.

Maybe you’re still preparing your move and wondering how you’ll make friends, deal with everyday situations in French, understand people when they speak naturally, or build a social life without staying inside an English-speaking bubble.

Friendship in France doesn’t always work on the same timeline as back home…

French conversations can get uncomfortable fast when you don’t understand everything.

One thing I keep telling Elliott: stop introducing yourself through your weakness. You don’t need to start every interaction with "Désolé, mon français n’est pas bon !" (Sorry, my French is bad.)

There are better ways to keep the conversation moving while staying confident and getting the clarification you need.

Elliott started with me as a false beginner, around A1-A2. We began working together about a year ago, took a break, and now we’re back working through that intermediate plateau. He’s also a very busy entrepreneur, so the goal has never been to fill his schedule with hours of homework. Coaching FLUENCE™ gives him a structure that fits around his life and keeps him practicing French consistently.

That’s the kind of progress I want: French that actually works when you need it in France.

French people don’t always express surprise the way Duolingo taught you 🇫🇷

Here are 3 expressions that came up naturally during one of my coaching sessions with Kayla.

By the way, Kayla has come a long way. She used to struggle to communicate and understand spoken French, and she believed that mastering more grammar would finally get her unstuck.

After a few months in Coaching FLUENCE™, she reached the goals we had set together. Today, she feels at home in her French village, handles everyday interactions with confidence, and lives much more like a local than
“the American expat in town.”

Kayla went to a restaurant in France with her family visiting from the US

This time, she handled the whole interaction herself in French: ordering, answering questions for everyone at the table, and keeping the conversation going without the waitress needing to switch to English or even offering to.

That matters because real progress shows up in moments like this, when French starts becoming something you can actually use in your life.

We’re still working together to go beyond the intermediate level, make her French more natural, and build even more confidence in real conversations.
