QUEENS, NY — Concerned parents and community members along with entire Pre-K class at Baby Steps will rally in solidarity along with local elected officials, including Councilman Phil Wong, Senator Joseph Addabbo's Chief of Staff, Raimondo Graziano, community leaders, as well as Transportation Alternatives and Open Plans will gather on June 3rd at 9:30 AM with a press conference at 10 AM to demand immediate traffic safety improvements at the deadly intersection of Fleet Street and Alderton Street on the Rego Park/Forest Hills border.
The intersection serves as a major pedestrian crossing point for families and THOUSANDS of children traveling to nearby schools, daycare centers, and youth programs, including PS 174, Baby Steps Daycare and Infant program, the Forest Hills Youth Athletic Association and Painters Playground.
The demonstration comes after decades of community complaints about dangerous driving conditions, repeated failures by motorists to obey stop signs, and multiple serious incidents at the intersection, including a vehicle crashing through the fence of a childcare center which ran over the Ghost Bike memorial from the fatal cyclist collision.
The Department of Transportation has repeatedly denied requests for stronger traffic controls despite mounting evidence that the current configuration is a ticking time bomb for pedestrians.
