Yesterday, I watched my wife do what she does best; teach, inspire, and remind our community that preserving our culture is an act of resistance. The colors, the movement, the laughter, it was pure liberation in motion.

Toni Morrison said it right: “If you are free, you need to free somebody else. If you have some power, then your job is to empower somebody else.”

That’s what I saw yesterday. Not just instruction, but an invitation to possibility. Not just a lesson, but a mirror held up to show our children who they can become. That’s the work. And watching her do it filled me with a pride that runs deeper than words.

There’s a kind of pressure you can’t learn from a book.

When a child rolls with a training partner, feeling resistance, working through a tough position, staying calm when things get hard; they’re not just learning jiu jitsu. They’re learning how to breathe under stress. How to problem-solve instead of panic. How to tap, reset, and try again without it meaning they failed.

That’s the real lesson on the mat: discomfort isn’t danger. It’s where growth lives.

This is why we train. Not just to compete — but to raise kids who know they can handle hard things.

Huge congratulations to Professor Matt on earning his 1st Degree Black Belt! Hard to believe it’s already been 3 years. Your dedication, leadership, and commitment to the journey continue to inspire everyone around you.

Another big congratulations to Jay on earning his Blue Belt! Well deserved, and we’re lucky to have you as part of our community.

Congratulations as well to everyone at WNY MMA who was promoted. It truly was an amazing event, and seeing so many old training partners made it even more special. Having so many of our Takeover Team members there made it feel like home.

Feeling thankful for the people, friendships, and community that Jiu-Jitsu continues to bring together. OSS 🤙🏽
