As a recruiter/hiring manager, I often remember those candidates who were engaging. The candidates who made me feel like I was having a conversation instead of just nodding “yes” to everything. The candidates that often stood out were those who came prepared. These individuals had done their research and it showed in the questions they asked that were more targeted than other candidates. I expect to get the general questions, but honestly, those are captured in a good job description. The questions that made the process for me enjoyable were the ones that indicated a level of self-reflection
I interviewed a candidate who had the right skill set but I was not blown away. What made her stand out was when I asked about her challenges/struggles. Her response was ‘I’m naturally quiet and because of that, people often overlook me, however my strengths are why I have held my previous positions for extended periods of time’. Her ability to zone in on my exact thoughts made me re-evaluate her credentials - she was hired and was amazing!
