TiiJUTSU of OKINAWA's sole purpose was to preserve life. Unlike the approach of Modern Sport Karate, it was NOT just A striking Art. Chinese Chin~na, Tekumi(gumi), Tori-te and Chi-jutsu were part of the 'combat arts', practiced on the Ryukyu islands. It is An erroneous belief of some in the Martial Arts, that Japanese Karate is the same as it's Okinawan (Tii) predecessor. The Okinawan Tiijutsu, consisted of : grappling*, joint locks, striking, weapons practice, sticky hands, internal longevity (soft) Breathing [qi] training & development, folk dance, control & seizure, resuscitation & medicine, and many other less known practices,etc.
*Ideally, in street fights, A Karate man avoids going to the ground, due to the disadvantages and dangers which are inherent in any no rules situations. On the hard ground surface,there is A strong possibility of being stabbed, strangulated and/or death.
Most experienced fighters are quite aware that in any given confrontation, combatants inevitably engage in (extremely) close quarters and most fighting systems contain techniques for such scenarios. To perceive such notion as Okinawan Combat to be purely A striking methodology is therefore, incorrect and A misconception.
