Our bodies are the outer expression of who we are. The image others see, the person we see in the mirror, the body that moves through the streets, cuts through the crowds, makes an entrance, that captures the gaze of others, our bodies carry us through the physical world. Our bodies touch the world. We roll in it, dance, walk and swim in this world.
Our physical ability dictates, to some degree, what course we take. When we’re children, we crawl, we drag our bodies across the floor, we look up, and cling to the world so as not to fall. In our adolescence and teens we hurdle across fields with reckless abandon, climb trees, and leap into unknown pools of water head first, an expression of youthful urgency, physical agility, and we instinctually recognize a dynamic connection to our bodies as a tool for sensual explosive activity.
As we mature the ease of this connection shifts. When we’re young we take our bodies health, it’s dynamic ability to recover, to bounce, for granted a little bit.. Understandably. As we grow our urgency is directed to devouring and manifesting our inner aspirations, learning, tasting countless experiences, creating our identities, defining how we want to manifest in this world of ours, and the body simply follows suit. Even if we choose physical activity to define ourselves, climbing mountains, surfing, competing in sports..there is little impediment to address our bodies with often casual rigor because we have no fear that our bodies will naturally respond, recover, and follow our direction. This doesn’t last long. As we get older the body, if treated without respect and attention slowly falls behind our inner ambitions, the activities of our minds. We get fatter, and, even worse, we get weaker, less capable of addressing the world with the quality of passion we might prefer.
That’s where intelligent exercise comes in.
