My perspective has COMPLETELY changed after 2 intense days of fast-paced auditions in New York City for LEMONADE!! 🍋
Editing the script and re-working songs as I’ve been building this brand-new musical from scratch has taught me so much about writing and composing, but sitting on the other side of the table for auditions taught me some fresh lessons about what actually works in the room as an actor.
To all my fellow actors hitting the pavement, these are my 3 absolute non-negotiables if you want to leave a positive impact on a creative team:
1️⃣ Bring your fullest self ✨ Don’t make yourself small or try to guess what the casting director wants. Make a choice that is bold and confident, even if it’s “wrong”, and let the team direct you from there. Diminishing your performance to play it safe will backfire every time.
2️⃣ Remember the unseen variables ⁉️ Casting decisions are influenced by a million factors entirely out of your control. Height, age, union status, local housing constraints, and cast chemistry all play a massive role. If you don’t get the job, it may not mean you weren’t great.
3️⃣ Seek out brutal honesty 🗣️ True confidence means being secure enough to ask for difficult, constructive critiques from artists you trust. A few slight adjustments based on honest feedback can take your performance from a polite “thank you” to a definitive “yes.”
We are officially in the final stretch as we prepare for our upcoming staged production at Trustus Theatre this July & the talent we saw in NYC has me incredibly hyped for what this cast is going to look like.
