NABJ-Philadelphia is asking you to come out on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2025, to Philadelphia City Council to support a resolution by Council President Kenyatta Johnson on the contributions of Mike Days.

We’d like to get as many of Mike’s friends, colleagues and other supporters there as possible. Please arrive by 10:30am in Council Chambers, Philadelphia City Hall, Room 400 (4th Floor). Our new president Melanie Burney will speak on behalf of the organization.

We thank Councilman Johnson and his Communications Director Vincent Thompson for this resolution in honor of Mike.

It is with very heavy heart that NABJ Philadelphia mourns the sudden passing of our President Michael I. Days, a respected journalist, mentor and cherished friend whose legendary career and commitment to excellence
inspired us all.

He was our inaugural president, agreeing to lead us during the past two years as we carved out our own space as the only affiliate chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists in the Philadelphia region. In our first year, Mike accepted the NABJ President’s Award on
behalf of the organization.

He loved and believed in NABJ-Philadelphia as much as he did NABJ, where he was a Life member and an inductee in 2017 into its Hall of Fame for
his outstanding contributions.

Mike brought to NABJ-Philadelphia the same determination that he had
shown as vice president for diversity and inclusion at the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News, from which he retired in 2020. Ten years before, he was editor of the Daily News when it won a Pulitzer Prize for
investigative journalism.

We will miss our friend dearly - his wisdom, compassion and dedication to journalism. His loss leaves a profound void in our organization and
our hearts. We extend our sympathy to his wife Angela and their family.

I still struggle with enjoying the moment. The thought process is usually “ok great, what’s next?” But 2024 was a year I’ve learned to make the most of everything. Most of all? I learned that nothing is more important than balance. Family, friends, transition, walking with God, all of it. (And yes, work.)

But if last year was any indication? 2025’s gonna go CRAZY.
