“No one saw you at 2 a.m. when the baby wailed for you.

No one saw you when a snoring exhausted man lay next to you who had to get up for work… so the night shift was yours.

No one saw you when the baby didn’t want to be put down. Falling asleep while drinking and using you as a dummy.

I know you feel invisible when you’ve changed another diaper… made another bottle… had another ni**le bitten… or made another snack.

NO ONE sees your exhaustion.

But you are not. YOU ARE NOT INVISIBLE.

Every time you help those little legs get into pants, wipe a butt, cut a sandwich. Every time you hold those little fingers or caress that little face. They see you. Those little eyes, they see you. They WATCH you.

You are growing a love that is the most powerful force on earth. One that can never be broken. And they’re watching you. Remember that.”

Sometimes, the most important work that you will ever do, goes seemingly unnoticed.

The recognition of new mothers is so minor, that often it comes disguised as being unappreciated.

And let’s be honest.
It doesn’t get the recognition it deserves.

It’s easy to lose track of time.
For an entire day to pass you by and you suddenly realise that you haven’t got a single thing done.

The house is a mess. Your hair is a mess.
Your mind is a mess.

But productivity comes in a different form, these days.

Being productive. Is sitting with your baby.
Holding your baby. Loving your baby.
Bonding with your baby.

Understanding that nothing else matters, than supporting your baby through this difficult time of getting to know their bright and scary new world.

And you’re navigating it together.
You’re a team. You’re not working against each other.

Their time of being this small and dependent on you is short. I cannot stress this enough.
Although in the moment, it can feel like an eternity.
In the grand scheme of things.
It’s minuscule.

And one day, not so very long from now, you will miss it.

And you’ll look back at how far you’ve come.

And you’ll understand.
That as a mother, being productive looks different now.

And the most important work you will have ever done, did not go unnoticed.

In fact, it made you stronger.
And helped to build you and your child into the people you are today.

Try to enjoy it.
Push aside the guilt of getting ‘nothing else’ done whilst you sit there together.

Because rest assured;

It IS the most important work that you will EVER do.

I couldn’t reach the toy.⠀

I reached out my hands but they couldn’t make it,⠀

I don’t know how to crawl just yet.⠀

So I looked around for you and cried, and there you came.⠀

I heard your voice say “You want that toy” as you moved it back to me, and I rested in the truth that you come when I call.⠀

Mama, ⠀

I know you get tired of my cries. It feels like cry for everything right now.⠀

I don’t know how to say “I need the toy” or most importantly “I need you” so I cry instead.⠀

Mama,⠀

It’s not a reflection of how I feel about you.⠀

I love you, that’s why I cry for you.⠀

I need you, that’s why I cry for you.⠀

I know you can’t always get to me right away, that’s ok.⠀

I love hearing your voice saying “I hear you, I’ll be there soon” as I wait for you.⠀

Mama, ⠀

I can’t wait for the day I can tell you how I feel.⠀

How in your arms I feel safe.⠀

How you are my fortress, my rock.⠀

How I find comfort in your voice, your body, and your presence.⠀

But right now I can’t,⠀

So when I need you I cry.⠀

Mama, ⠀

I see your tears too.⠀

I know it can be hard.⠀

In my short life we’ve already been through so much together, and I know we will get through this too.⠀

I know you don’t always feel like you are doing good, but mama you are more than just good, you are mine. ⠀

Mama,⠀

I love you.⠀

So tonight if I cry, know I don’t expect you to get it right, right away.⠀

I know you are trying to learn me, just as I’m trying to learn this world around me.⠀

Mama, we will get through this.⠀

One day at a time,⠀

One minute at a time,⠀

One cry at a time.⠀
