Athletes are stepping onto the frontlines of climate advocacy. 🌍⚽

This September, during NYC Climate Week, Football For Future and EcoAthletes are bringing together athletes, climate leaders, and changemakers for a morning of coffee and conversation, marking the launch of the Playable Future Coalition, a player-led network of professional athletes across the men’s and women’s game advocating for climate resilience in football.

This is a networking gathering first and foremost, come meet the people building this movement, hear from a few of the voices leading it, and be in the room where it’s announced.

🇺🇸 Last month, Football For Future brought together leaders from across sport and sustainability for the NYC Football Climate Summit.

Hosted alongside Columbia University, the event explored how football can build resilience to a changing climate — and introduced our new Playable Future Blueprint, a practical framework for climate-proofing community football and turning sustainability commitments into action.

Players protecting the game they grew up playing ⚽🌍
Professional footballers are speaking up. The changing climate is affecting the grassroots pitches where dreams were turned realities for players now representing Necaxa, Washington Spirit, Italy’s national team, FC Penafiel and so many other clubs.
These are the pitches where their journeys began, and where the next generation of players should have the chance to begin theirs.
The Playable Future Coalition is a player-led call to major tournament organisers to invest in the communities that host them - not only to make their events safer, but to also protect the grassroots pitches where the game starts. If we don’t protect the game it becomes unplayable for the next generation.

Introducing Pitches in Peril: Floods in Mathare. 🎥

A football pitch is never just somewhere to play.

It creates opportunity, belonging, friendships, health and hope. But across the world, climate change is increasingly threatening the places where football begins.

In 2024, devastating floods swept through Mathare, Nairobi. Thousands were displaced, and the community’s football pitch became unusable.

This film follows professional footballer Meshack Ochieng as he returns to the pitch that shaped his childhood, exploring what happens when climate impacts reach the heart of a community.

With AFCON 2027 coming to East Africa, we hope this story starts a bigger conversation about protecting community pitches, and the opportunities they create.

Introducing the Football For Future Summer Academy!!

We’re excited to announce the launch of the Football For Future Summer Academy - a brand new educational experience for young people who love football.

Over two immersive days, participants will explore the game beyond the pitch through professional coaching, exclusive club experiences, industry masterclasses and life skills workshops.

Our mission is simple: use football as a vehicle to help young people develop confidence, curiosity and character.

Students will play football, learn about the history and future of the game, hear from professionals working across the industry, build new friendships and experience English football from the inside.

As with everything we do at Football For Future, sustainability is woven throughout the programme, helping young people understand how football can be a force for positive social and environmental change.

This August we’re launching our first pilot in London, bringing together a small group of students to help shape what we hope becomes a flagship educational programme for the years ahead.

If you’re a parent, teacher, school or youth organisation who knows a young person aged 14–21 who would benefit from the experience, we’d love to hear from you.

A new player-led climate movement is here.
More than 20 current and former professional footballers have come together to establish The Playable Future Coalition, advocating for climate adaptation to become part of every major football tournament’s legacy.
“Every professional footballer started on a grassroots pitch. Those communities invested in us long before the world knew our names. Now it’s our turn to stand together and help protect them.” - Tiffany Sornpao, founding member & goalkeeper for Vitória SC.
Coalition members are using their collective influence to push governing bodies and tournament organisers to protect the grassroots pitches and communities where football begins.

Introducing Pitches in Peril: Frontlines, the first in-depth short film exploring the relationship between World Cup host nations, football communities, and climate risk.
Uncovering how climate change is already affecting football across World Cup host nations, from grassroots communities to the game’s biggest stage.
85% of fans have experienced extreme weather disrupting football. Fewer than half connect it to climate change. This film aims to close that gap.

Launching our Playable Future Blueprint - to protect the future of football!

Football is already feeling the impact of the climate crisis. Community clubs and grassroots pitches are under disproportionate strain.

This is being felt in a very tangible, measurable way: playable days. How many playable days are being lost each year to extreme weather? And how can we protect playable days, in order to protect football and the social benefits that it delivers for communities?

That’s why we’ve developed our Playable Future Blueprint: an operational framework for climate-proofing community football infrastructure and tournament legacy investment.

It provides football’s organising bodies with a transferable model to integrate climate-risk safeguards across the lifecycle of grassroots football developments, ensuring a playable future for generations to come.

With the launch, we’re welcoming opportunities to work with football’s governing bodies, tournament organisers and regional authorities to integrate this model and deliver a playable future.

By securing the places where we play our shared game, we help protect our shared home.

Last week, we hosted our Football Climate Summit in New York, alongside Columbia University Sustainability Management.

You couldn’t write the timing. We arrived as wildfire smoke blanketed the Manhattan skyline, ahead of the World Cup Final weekend. Hazy skies and air quality warnings added to a World Cup already disrupted by unplayable heat and extreme weather.

We hosted senior leaders from football, climate, infrastructure, academia and philanthropy to address exactly those issues.

⚽ How can football’s major tournaments become global accelerators of climate adaptation?
⛈️ How many playable days will we lose to climate change, without investment in climate resilience?
🏟️ How can we protect the future of our game?

We launched our Playable Future Blueprint, heard from our expert panel on “Risk to Readiness: Football’s Climate Future”, and held focused roundtables to turn ideas into action.

One afternoon, one room, and one shared ask: protect community football from the climate realities we are already facing.
