One of my favorite parts about my job is arriving in a city I know nothing about.
This week, it was Manchester.
Most people think of football when they hear Manchester. I left thinking about its history. Walking through the city, I learned how much of the Industrial Revolution was shaped here. The textile mills, cotton industry, and machinery that helped transform manufacturing all have roots in Manchester.
The more I travel, the less interested I am in checking countries off a list. Iβm more interested in understanding the story behind the place. The restaurants. The architecture. The conversations. Even the accents.
The farther north I traveled, the stronger the accents became. There were moments I had to replay conversations in my head before I understood what someone had said. It reminded me that learning another culture takes curiosity more than familiarity.
I think thatβs why Iβve always admired Anthony Bourdain (Funny thing, I was watching his documentary on the flight back π). He didnβt seem interested in simply visiting a place. He immersed himself in it. Not to become a local overnight, but to appreciate the people who already called it home.
This was also my first project outside of London, which made the experience even more meaningful. Every new store opening isnβt just another project. Itβs another opportunity to see the world through a different perspective.
The older I get, the more I realize travel isnβt about collecting destinations.
Itβs about collecting perspectives.
