DO YOU KNOW WHO’S BEHIND THE ADS THAT CAN MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE GARBAGE?
A lot of times, it’s just totally imperfect, struggling, depressed, hurting weirdos like I was (and still sometimes am).
I worked in advertising for nearly fifteen years, a business I never meant to work in, but randomly fell into. I used my creative talent to give corporations human voices and to make famous people more famous and rich people richer. While I perpetuated body image standards I was nowhere near to the public, I binged every night in shame. I hate to think of what those unattainable images did to people when they had no idea that they weren’t real, that there was a fallible weirdo like me behind them.
After I got sick in 2018, I tried to piece together the story of how that all happened, because it didn’t make sense to me how a strange and kind of broken girl like me, who wrote earnest poems and rage-sang to Sinead O’Connor, ended up in a superficial career like advertising.
Maybe we once worked together and you want to know what I wrote about that time. Maybe we’ve never met but something I’ve said here resonates. Maybe you have your own secrets or shames that struggle with. To be clear, this is not a “before” and “happily ever after” story. This is a story about grief and love and the end of “traditional” media and self acceptance and work and striving and robot overlords and celebrity and fatness and Healing(tm) and s*x and self loathing and the messages companies need us to believe so we keep buying more stuff.
I hope you read it and I hope you love it. Yes, I wrote this book for me, so I could better understand the story of my own life, but I also wrote it for you — so you can know that no matter what anyone wants you to believe, you are perfect just as you are right now. ❤️
