Exercise is promoted as a means to lose weight & gain muscle. However, although exercise can certainly do that, I think that as a society we've lost sight of the real reason why exercise is important.

Being strong, fit, and able allows you to ENJOY more of life, throughout your whole life. And, according to research, suffer from less disease and chronic pain.

As a health professional, I would love to see exercise being promoted more as a necessary component to long, healthy, and vibrant life, rather than a means to lose 5 pounds and tone your abs.

Strength training continues to be underrated as a tool to manage and prevent musculoskeletal pain in women - despite a solid body of research highlighting the tremendous benefits.

Unfortunately, women are more commonly prescribed passive treatments (massage) and/or invasive treatments (steroid injections or surgery) before (or instead of) being educated on the benefits of strength training.

As health professionals, we need to be encouraging women to actively participate in strength training throughout their life, not just for aesthetic reasons, but to maintain healthy pain-free mobility and function.

Did you know that approximately 1 in 3 postmenopausal women are reported to have osteoporosis? And, about half of these women will sustain a fracture in their remaining lifetime which can lead to serious morbidity?

Strength training has been consistently shown in research to be the most beneficial thing women can do to prevent bone loss. However, despite the well-known benefits, it's estimated that less than 25% of women aged over 50 participate in regular strength training (and this drops to less than 10% over 65)!

So what can you do to change these statistics?

Firstly, if you're a health professional, we need to do better to encourage women to strength train throughout their lifetime. Strength training isn't just for the guys and gals who want big muscles. It's fundamental to living a healthy and active life and it becomes crucial as women get older and naturally lose muscle and bone strength.

If you're a woman, no matter your age or fitness level, I'd encourage you to add strength training to your routine. This doesn't mean you need to lift heavy weights or become a bodybuilder. You don't even need to join a gym! Body weight exercises like lunges, squats, and planks are some of the best exercises you can do at home to build stronger bones.
