I know for many, it feels really dark right now. It's hard to know how to respond, for those facing the possibility of very undesired changes ahead.
The peace I've found this week comes from a commitment I've made to myself and the world around me to stay open. Open-hearted and open-minded, with open ears and eyes.
I can show compassion and empathy to my loved ones, friends, and clients, and that gives me purpose and makes me feel whole.
With an open mind, I leave myself malleable to possible outcomes, paths, and choices. Most of us are not without choices for change, and for those of us who have the means, we can try to be a voice for those who don't have as many choices as we do.
My ears are open to hear. With that, I need a good sense of non-attachment, so I can really hear the underlying desires and needs of the person next door who may not agree with me. I know it's tempting to slap the label of "other" onto people on the other side of the aisle, but staying open to hear gives us more chances to understand, empathize, or sometimes influence someone's perspective of the world. It doesn't always work, but it does help us sleep at night and work with our colleagues during the day.
Finally, my eyes are open. I don't recommend being overly vigilant or anxious, but I know we have a better shot at surviving and thriving if we keep our eyes open for changes to which we may need to respond, for ourselves, our families, and for humanity. Staying open to possibilities for avenues to help others, for opportunities for positive change and growth, we will get through to the other side, together.
If this all sounds too positive right now for your current frame of mind, then just try to stay open to the present. In truth, it's all that really exists and all we really have. In practice, staying in the moment will help you breathe and function when you feel like you just can't.
Finally, if you're looking for inspiration, my favorites are Brené Brown, Eckhart Tolle, Don Miguel Ruiz, and Paolo Coelho. My favorite heart-healing audiobook is probably A Manuscript Found in Accra, read gorgeously by Jeremy Irons.
Be love for each other. Stay open. We need you.
