Judo became an official Olympic sport in 1964.

Beyond competitions and combat, judo involves technical research, practice of kata (forms), self-defense work, physical preparation and sharpening of spirit.

Seiryoku-Zenyo is one of two fundamental principles of judo which can be translated as maximum efficient use of physical and mental energy. The other being Jita-Kyoei, or mutual prosperity for self and others.
