Sound the Trumpet. Slim Pickings if You Are Stuck with Eagles.

Judging from the comments in the media this week, the Philadelphia Eagles are still stuck in pre-season mode. There was talk of “timing” and “chemistry” and “lack of cohesion” and “lack of experience.”

Yeah, missing spring workouts, a real summer camp and injuries have made life difficult for the Birds. But still, they have played--or, at least shown up for-- nine games and they were coming off a bye week before last week’s historical ineptitude against the Giants.

How inept? Zero, nada, zilch first downs on 11 third-down attempts.

Until they come out and admit what everyone can see--the Eagles SUCK--no one is going to turn this thing around. Certainly not HC/OC Doug Pederson, DC Jim Schwartz or QB Carson Wentz. And at least three Eagles are on the COVID list.

Where does that leave the owners of Eagles this week versus Cleveland?

The over/under seems high at 47, given that the Browns scored 10 points last week--although the weather had something to do with that--and a “high-scoring” game for the Birds is mid-20’s.

Don’t start Wentz unless you don’t have anyone better. ESPN ranks him 12th this week (one behind Tom Brady!) which seems high. Cleveland’s Baker Mayfield is 21st which seems low. He has a better QB rating than Wentz and the Eagles have only three interceptions this season--tied for Dallas at the very bottom of the list.

TE Zach Ertz is supposed to be back this week. Yawn. The Eagles tight end and screen games have been non-factors this season. Claiming TE Dallas Goedert is the “next Ertz” is false advertising. So far. Still, ESPN has him ranked PPR-9 this week, just ahead of Cleveland TE Austin Hooper. Goedert has not even been the next TE Richard Rogers--who might be a better starter on your fantasy team.

RB Miles Sanders is always a great pick--if his coach will give him the damn ball. PPR-5 this week.

Browns RB Nick Chubb is PPR-9 and RB Kareem Hunt is PPR-12. Both of them should look good against the Eagles’ bend-and-break run defense. The Eagles are giving up 133 yds./game on the ground. Don’t play the Eagles D.

You won’t find an Eagles receiver until PPR-33, where WR Travis Fulgham is listed. His targets suffered last week with Jalen Reagor and Alshon Jeffrey back in the line-up but mostly non-factors.

If you are just betting the game, take the Browns at -3. The Eagles are 0-5-1 in their last six AFC-opponent games.

Eagles-Giants: Wentz this week? Is history bound to repeat itself with Boston Scott?

The Eagles are back from the bye as healthy as they have been since Week 1. RB Miles Sanders looks to be back. RT Lane Johnson will return and LG Issac Seamulo might also but Eagle injury-speak sounds like the latter will not play. Even WR Alshon Jeffrey is expected to suit up for the first time this season. The only notable still not playing is TE Zach Ertz.

Sanders against the Giants is a good match-up since New York allows the 8th most fantasy points to running backs. For what it is worth, Sanders is ranked as the 4th (PPR and non-PPR) running back this week.

A sleeper pick is RB Boston Scott who has had big games against the Giants. Last year he scored four touchdowns against the Giants and in the first meeting this year racked up 92 yards and a TD on 15 touches.

Given the struggles of QB Carson Wentz, one would think that HC/OC Doug Pederson would lean toward the running game. One would think. Doug’s game plan and play-calling have been, to be charitable, erratic. And the Giants ARE ranked 8th against the run.

So, what about Carson Wentz? We’ve been waiting for the breakout game all year. Is this the opponent to make it happen? The Giants are 28th in pass defense, 11th in sacks.

On the plus side, Wentz had the bye-time to figure things out, a full week of practice with previously IR’ed TE Dallas Goedert and WR Jalen Reagor. Both played against the Cowboys in the game before the bye, but both were non-factors except for Reagor’s two-point conversion. Add Sanders and Jeffries to the mix and Wentz has most of his weapons to choose from. Ironically, that could be a downgrade for refreshing WR Travis Fulgham (29 receptions/435 yds.). Will Fulgham get his fair share of targets with the “big boys” back in the line-up?

On the negative side, we still are waiting for Wentz’s breakout game of the year. Wentz did throw for 359 yards in the first Giants game this season, a 22-21 win, in a good--not great--performance until a spectacular fourth quarter.

ESPN has Wentz ranked 11th this week in PPR (12th non-PPR). For perspective, Giants QB Daniel Jones is 20th in both. Jones has been effective at times against the Eagles.

How much confidence should you have in taking one of these quarterbacks? The over/under is on the low side (44.5) so not a whole lot of scoring is expected.

Wentz is going to have a great game one of these days. Once again, I would bet this week will be it. Start him unless you have someone clearly better.

The 2-4-1 Eagles are a 3-to-6-point favorite against the 2-5 Dallas Cowboys in a “battle” for first place on Sunday night. Not even the oddsmakers know what to make of this mess.

As inconsistent--to be charitable--as the injury-plagued Birds have been, Dallas has been consistently horrendous, especially on defense and may have a rookie, 7th round draft pick at quarterback. Yikes.

NBC should use the song from the old TV series M*A*S*H to open its broadcast.

Long-time Eagles’ fans know better than to bank a win, however. In Philadelphia, a glass half-full is really three-quarters empty.

With a hairline crack in it.

Which would be in line with the Eagles propensity for injury.

The obvious advantage this week for the Eagles is Carson Wentz. Start him. What he is doing with a practice squad offense is amazing. Most of his offensive linemen graded out at “replacement” level after the win over the Giants and he still threw for 359 yards.

This week, it looks like LT Jason Peters will be back (for some of the game?) and RT Lane Johnson has an outside chance of playing.

WR Jalen Reagor is expected to play and maybe TE Dallas Goedert also.

WR Travis Fulgham appears to be a legit NFL playmaker. Worth a start.

(No doubt, with things looking up for the Eagles, this is the week Wentz will get hurt. Three-quarters empty, you know.)

Meanwhile, in Dallas, QB Ben DiNucci has been “relentlessly” preparing for the Eagles. Which is good, because he was wretchedly unprepared for The Football Team last week. QB Andy Dalton may come out of concussion protocol for the game but won’t be getting many--if any--reps in practice. And he hasn’t been very good anyway.

G Zack Martin should be back this week and C Joe Looney is once again practicing, but still.

Lucky you if you have the Eagles defense.

Maybe RB Zeke Elliot is worth a start. Maybe he will get 35 carries to keep the pressure off DiNucci or Dalton.

Don’t expect the Dallas WR’s to have big games.

Dallas spent the week getting rid of some defensive--malcontents? and might get some key players back this week in LB Sean Lee and CB Chidobe Awuzie.

Will all that help the team that is giving up the most points per game in the league?

Can’t get any worse.

Oh, wait. It’s 2020. Everything gets worse.

Coming Up: A Sunday Dreary--for the Eagles

Good news fantasy and Eagles fans--DeSean Jackson and Alshon Jeffrey are seeing how they feel this week. Maybe they can play Sunday against the Ravens. This is not a recording.

Yo, Eagles. How about saying, “Nevermore”?

Can you imagine Travis Fulgham (10 catches, 150 yds last week) being relegated to the bench or just situational plays to get either of those two on the field?

Guess the Eagles picked a bad week to have live fans (approximately 5,500) for the first time this season.

Anyway, Fulgham is not going to sneak up on the Ravens like he did the Steelers last week. Damn video.

Good luck to Carson Wentz having time to pass. RT Lane Johnson is getting a “second opinion” on the bad ankle that sent him out of the Steelers game. In Eagles injury-speak that could mean he is out for the year.

Wentz will be protected by C Jason Kelce and four “who’s thats?” Against a creative defense that got five sacks from defensive backs last week against the Bengals.

Maybe Miles Sanders can take some pressure off Wentz with his big-play ability? Last week, Sanders streaked to a 74-yard TD, the longest TD run by an Eagle since the Brian Mitchell days, but had only 10 other carries.

HC Doug Pederson apparently does not have Sanders on his fantasy team(s).

Of course, Pederson does have his second-best running back to utilize--Carson Wentz. That’s all you need to know about the running game.

“This it is and nothing more,” wrote fantasy expert Edgar Allan Poe.

Sanders is still a decent choice to start on your fantasy squad because he has the big-play capability. Obviously--Doug--he needs the ball to do that.

Keep waiting for TE Zach Ertz to bust out. Does not appear to be happening soon. Ertz looks like a cutout of himself.

If you have the Ravens defense, you are in good shape.

Offensively, Marquis Brown is Baltimore’s highest-rated non-PPR wide receiver candidate (13) according to ESPN. RB Mark Ingram II is only 29. (Sanders is 8 BTW).

QB Lamar Jackson is four. Congrats if you have him. Start him. Yes, he has been “struggling” but this looks like a set-up for a breakout game. Eagles DB Darius Slay is in concussion protocol.

The Eagles are rightly a touchdown underdog on their home field. The Over/Under is a little low at 46, but that is probably because the Eagles will have trouble scoring. The Eagles have played better than expected in the last two weeks. They are due for a letdown.

Is there—is there balm in [Philadelphia]?—tell me—tell me, I implore!

Quoth the Raven “Nevermore.”
