On the first day of work at a serious corporate internship in Dallas, I was hit by an 18 wheeler on my way home from work.

It was devastating. I was so shocked, crying in my car in the middle of an intersection on the side of the highway. Thankfully, the truck had hit my passenger side and I was uninjured.

On top of that, I had a terrible first day at my corporate job! I had stumbled through introductions with managers and colleagues. There was even a weird stain on my shirt from the Chick-fil-a I ate that morning.

I seriously didn’t know how I was going to recover from that. I didn’t drive myself to work for weeks after that, hitching a ride with a family member each morning.

But I knew I had to push through that layer of fear I was doing with, and make the most out of the opportunity I was given. So I vowed to start driving myself to work in the mornings so that I could arrive at an earlier time, and I volunteered myself first in every potential project that came up that summer. I knew that growth would only happen if I moved out of my comfort zone and pushed myself to be uncomfortable, so I took the time to go on nearly a hundred coffee chats and to find myself mentors that summer.

And finding that mentor, the one who really understood me and was willing to give me a project to work on, was life changing.

Having someone believe in you is the biggest thing you need to push through that layer of insecurity and doubt. That is the power of a coach and a mentor.

I get asked that a lot. As if there’s one secret to getting in great shape.

And I do have a secret… but it’s probably not what you think.
