Something exciting is taking shape behind the scenes at Waters by Klaus.

Klaus gives us a look at the work currently underway to bring our Esox line of fish reproductions up to date and transition it fully to our 3D printed method of manufacturing.

For Northern Pike, Chain Pickerel, and Muskie fans, there is a lot to look forward to.

The move to 3D printing allows us to continue refining the anatomy, detail, consistency, and overall form of these iconic freshwater predators while giving fish taxidermists and artists a quality reproduction to build their finished work on.

In this behind-the-scenes look, Klaus shares some of the development work going into the next generation of the Waters by Klaus Esox lineup.

A closer look at what’s coming next from Waters by Klaus.

In this video, Klaus gives us a peek at another project we’ve been working on: taking some of the best examples from our JG Replicas lineup, scanning them, and bringing them into the modern era as high-quality 3D printed fish reproductions.

For taxidermists and fish artists, one of the biggest advantages is what happens before the painting even begins. These prints require almost no prep before finishing. There’s no mold release residue to clean up or interfere with paint adhesion, no grinding, and none of the extra prep work that can stand between you and the creative process.

What you get is a clean, highly detailed surface and an exceptional canvas for creating your next piece of fish art.

We’re excited to continue expanding our 3D printed lineup while bringing some proven JG forms forward with today’s technology.

Klaus is giving you a first look at another species that will soon be joining the Waters by Klaus 3D Printed Reproduction collection, the Brown Trout.

This reproduction is based on an Arkansas state record specimen, and we are currently producing these blanks to fill a custom order.

Because these are large fish, this project also gives you a good look at how we handle one of the challenges of 3D printing full-size fish reproductions.

A fish this size cannot be printed as a single piece.

Before printing begins, the digital model has to be divided into multiple sections. Each section is carefully designed so the separate prints can be assembled with a precise fit.

Once the pieces are printed, they are joined, finished, and blended together so the final reproduction looks like one continuous fish. Maintaining the anatomy, surface detail, proportions, and overall shape throughout that process is a major part of creating a quality reproduction.

In this video, Klaus shows you the Brown Trout up close and gives you a better idea of what goes into printing and assembling a fish of this size.

We are currently completing three of these for a custom order, and Brown Trout reproductions will soon be available to order through Waters by Klaus.

There’s more coming to Waters by Klaus.

Klaus gives us a look at some of the work currently taking shape in the shop, including a piece built around our soon-to-be-released reproduction corals.

We’re in the process of finalizing development on several types of coral designed to give fish artists and taxidermists more options when building realistic saltwater habitat. Because the fish are only part of the story—the habitat is what helps complete the scene.

We’re also working on a line of tropical saltwater fish reproductions, giving artists even more opportunities to build colorful, detailed saltwater displays.

These products are still in development, but we’re getting closer.

New technology doesn’t automatically mean better quality.

That was one of our biggest concerns when we first began looking seriously at 3D printing, and it’s a concern some of you have brought up as Waters by Klaus and Antlers by Klaus continue to move away from traditional molding for many of our reproductions.

So, does a 3D printed fish blank actually measure up?

For us, the answer had to be yes before we were willing to put our name on it.

We didn’t jump into 3D printing simply because the technology existed. We watched it develop for years. We watched the accuracy improve, the level of detail increase, and the equipment and materials become more capable.

Only when we felt the finished product had reached a level deserving of the Waters by Klaus name did we begin making the change.

And we didn’t rely solely on our own opinion.

Our current 3D printed fish blanks have been put into the hands of some of the nation’s most gifted fish artists, the people who know exactly what they need from a reproduction. They’ve worked with them, finished them, competed with them…and they’re winning awards.

That means something to us.

Technology may have changed the way the blank is produced, but our standard for the finished product hasn’t changed.

Accuracy. Detail. Consistency. And most importantly, a quality foundation that allows a talented artist to do their best work.

3D printing is changing the way we produce fish reproductions at Waters by Klaus, but does that mean there are fewer people involved in the process?

It’s a fair question, and one we’ve seen come up in the comments on some of our videos.

In this video, Klaus addresses the concern directly and explains what 3D printing actually looks like behind the scenes at Waters by Klaus.

While the technology has changed parts of our process, it certainly hasn’t eliminated the people behind it. Quite the opposite.

There is a dedicated team working constantly on the research, development, refinement, testing, production, finishing, and continued improvement of our 3D printed offerings. And that doesn’t include the outside vendors and specialists whose work helps support what we do.

There are still a lot of skilled hands involved in getting one of these products from an idea to something we’re confident putting the Waters by Klaus name on.

For us, the changeover to 3D printing has been overwhelmingly positive. It gives our team new challenges and new opportunities, allows us to continue developing more species, sizes, and options, and gives taxidermists and artists more choices while helping us maintain consistent quality from one reproduction to the next.

Technology may change the tools we use, but knowledgeable people, craftsmanship, problem-solving, and attention to detail are still at the center of what we do.

A Sneak Peek at What’s Coming Next from Waters by Klaus

Klaus is giving you a look behind the scenes at something new we’ve been working on at Waters by Klaus.

We are excited to be developing a full array of reproduction corals created for fish artists looking to enhance saltwater fish mounts and aquatic displays.

Producing pieces like these at the level of detail we’re after is only made possible through 3D scanning and 3D printing technology, giving us the ability to capture complex natural forms and turn them into reproduction components artists can incorporate into their own work.

For us, it’s another opportunity to expand what’s possible for the fish artists and provide more options for creating complete, convincing aquatic presentations.
