Hey y’all! ❤️ We’ve hit a roadblock and need a little community support as we prepare to teach 1,000 children in New Orleans water safety this fall.

We have the staff, programming, passion, and experience but we need some help bridging the funding gap to make this program happen. Every donation, like, share, comment, and repost helps us get closer to our goal and we truly appreciate you.

If you know Safe Swim, you know that accessible aquatics is our mission. We have dedicated our organization to making swimming accessible for all — from low-cost lessons and language accessibility, to instruction for all abilities, baby and adult lessons, and a commitment to developing and promoting diversity in aquatics.

Our water safety programming has a special place in our hearts because it allows us to reach so many students in a short period of time.

During the 2024–2025 school year, we provided free water safety instruction to 1,138 Orleans Parish students. For many of these children, it was their first swim lesson. For some, it was their first time ever being in a swimming pool.

Thanks to our partnership with the CDC Foudnation, we have some data to back up our work. After completing the program:

• 44.2% of students could float for at least 30 seconds, compared with 22.4% before the program.

• 81.2% could submerge and exhale, compared with 49.8% before the program.

• 21.9% could swim 25 yards, compared with 10.9% before the program.

• Students showed a median improvement of one skill level in both floating and swimming distance.

We are SO excited to reach another 1,000 students this fall, but we need help bridging the funding gap to get there.

The remaining cost comes down to approximately $24 per student — but truly, any amount helps. $5, $10, $24, $100, or simply sharing this post can help us reach more people and get these kids in the water.

Let's keep our families safe this 4th! Here are a few water safety tips for the day:

1) Assign a water watcher - if you don't have a lifeguard on site assign one adult to watch over the water every 15 minutes and take turns watching the pool. No phones, no distractions. Don't assume-assign.

2.) Know your swimmer's skill level. Sometimes non-swimmers take off their floatation devices, follow big kids into the pool, or end up in the deep end without swim skills. Be sure you and everyone around you knows your child's skills and limitations.

3.) If someone needs help in the pool reach something long to them or throw something that floats. Do not jump into the water to rescue someone - they will sink you down and you can both drown. Reach or throw, don't go!

4.) If a child is missing, always check the water first. Every second counts in a drowning. The sooner CPR is started and EMS is involved, the better chance for a full recovery.
