Lights Out for Louisiana a Big Success as Peak Spring Migration comes to a Close
The spring migration period, which began on April 1st, is beginning to wind down. As we reach the end of May most of the birds migrating from South and Central America through the Mississippi Flyway have crossed our coast and through most of our state on their way to nesting grounds further north. At its peak in late April, more than 5 million birds per night were flying over and through Louisiana. Our largest one-day migration came on April 29th, when Louisiana had more than 18 million birds flying over our state. To date, Louisiana has welcomed an estimated 413,710,100 migrating birds to the United States. That’s a staggering amount of wildlife that depend on the Sportsman’s Paradise to complete their annual journey.
And thanks to you, most of these birds were able to avoid collisions with homes, businesses, and other buildings. The simple act of turning off or turning down your interior and exterior lights from 11pm to 6am during this spring migration period made a tangible difference to these migrating birds. We don’t know the exact number, of course, but there is little doubt that you saved birds’ lives.
While the peak migration time is over for this spring, there are still stragglers out there making their way across our state, so remember: Before you Hit the Hay, Hit the Switch! Birds are counting on you.
As the summer gets underway, LWF and our partners will be gearing up for some new and exciting features we have planned for our Lights Out program just in time for the fall migration, when all these birds head back south. So be on the lookout for those as we get closer to September.
