| Jeff's story:
"Hi, my name is Jeff Uhlmeyer and I am honored to be part of Crohn’s and Colitis Awareness Week. I, like so many people, am directly affected by these digestive illnesses. When I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease in 2009, I had no knowledge of the disease and had never really heard of it. Luckily, I found many resources through my physician and online to better understand my disease. Today, with the guidance of my doctor and being treated with a biologic medication, I manage my symptoms very well and realize that I am lucky in relation to so many that exhibit much more severe symptoms.
I always think to myself: what if I had to struggle with Crohn’s or Colitis as a child or teenager? Our young people of today face so many challenges and stresses of life as it is. Throw in a digestive illness and all the symptoms that no one likes to talk about and the future for a teenage or young adult can seem very bleak. Struggling with a digestive disease can be very tough to live with both physically and mentally. It is for that reason that I became involved with the CCFA and created a team for Take Steps for Crohn’s and Colitis. Those of us who manage our symptoms and lead active and professional careers can be a great resource for children suffering from more severe symptoms.
Over the past 5 years, Team Southeast Iowa has raised nearly $30,000 for Take Steps. More importantly, by hosting an annual golf tournament and talking about these digestive illnesses, we have spread awareness and met so many people who either have IBD or know someone who does. We will continue to volunteer and I would urge anyone who is affected by IBD to do the same and be a glimmer of hope for those really struggling with their symptoms.
